Did any form of herbal smoking exist in Africa, Europe or Asia before the traiding of tobaco with the new world?

Does the teaming million’s silence mean that there was no smoking of sage or opium before the introduction of tobacco to the old world from the new world?

( or is it just that my spelling is just to atrowshus )
