In spite of the 70+ posts that were contributed to [Pre-Poll Data Collecting – Westerns Stars](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=753389)– which had been active from 04-02-2015 03:10 PM until **(#72) - 05-04-2015, 06:52 PM** – it took [this elegant post](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=18407413&postcount=28) in [Your Top 5 All-Time Westerns Stars](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=755009) – which has been active since **04-21-2015, 10:38 AM** – for me to realize that, with a few exceptions, the focus of that effort has wound up being predominantly MALE! I’d like to try to correct that! I almost called this thread [Westward the Women](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044205/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) after an old movie I saw as a kid, but you get the idea, I hope. Please add some names of the ladies and girls who contributed more than a little bit to the success of TV and Movie Westerns over the years. After a sizeable number have been submitted, I’ll crank up yet another poll on the subject. Sorry it’s taken so long! Thanks, **Johanna**! For starters, how about: [Mercedes McCambridge](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0564790/?ref_=nv_sr_5) [Betty Hutton](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002149/?ref_=nv_sr_1) [Jean Simmons](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001739/?ref_=nv_sr_1) [Joan Crawford](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001076/?ref_=tt_ov_st) [Susan Hayward](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001333/?ref_=nv_sr_1) … and surely you know of many others. ---

> [@Folacin](#): > > [Dale Evans](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0262661/bio) seems an obvious inclusion? Yes! In fact, if you were to say to almost anybody over 50, “name me a cowgirl” (or whatever term is best for a “female westerns star”) odds are she would be the first or one of the first five to be named. Queen of the Cowgirls! ---

Thank you, **Zeldar**. After Katy Jurado, I’m fond of the cast of [_Bad Girls_](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109198/?ref_=nv_sr_2). Madeleine Stowe in particular. Barbara Stanwyck is a slam dunk, obviously, but already counted above. Then there’s [Dana Delany in Tombstone](https://youtu.be/whLOSRkoewQ?t=10s). Oh my God, Dana Delany. Yes. Plus Joanna Pacuła for good measure. ETA: I second the nomination for Jodie Foster. ---
