From this old fogey’s perspective, a couple of the more prevalent recent fashion trends have been bleached jeans, ultra-low rise pants, and exposed midriffs on girls, and low-slung oversized pants and exposed boxers on guys. What do you predict all the hepcats will be wearing a year/5 years from now? (Also, please feel free to mock/educate me as to what today’s hot fashions truly are!) ---

I think dresses are going to make a big splash this year. I hope the chunky shoes die a painful death. I’m all for stilleto heels. ---

By then, fashions should come back around the circle so men will be wearing slacks with the waistband at or above the navel. Women will enjoy wearing hoopskits and crinolines. Denim, if worn at all, will be unadorned, unfrayed and unbleach-spotted. Well… The best I can pray for is a speedy return to the days when underwear was well, UNDER and not seen. ---

Unfortunately for those of us that do not wish to see others underwear, I’ve noticed a disturbing trend in that pants are being worn so low and dragging the boxers down so much that guys actually wear another pair of boxers underneath the first. For the girls, I expect that high riding thongs and low riding pants aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, so I suspect that the thong makers will fancy them up to make them more showy with brighter/contrasting colors and eye-catching designs. ---

I’m still lighting candles and praying for the disappearance of the backward baseball cap. But what I’m afraid we will get, if people are really clueless enought to continue buying into the soul-cringing “retro” look, is spandex & big hair for women, blazers over tee shirts, and hair that won’t move in a hurricane due to gel for men (the last part is already here…ick. hate cruncy hair.) Eve, the west coast NEEDS you. ---

Wait, let me clarify: The large numbers _of girls_ will be wearing one tie each at any given time. Not to confuse with the prediction of undisclosed amounts of girls each wearing a large number _of ties_ simultaneously. ---

Yes, I’m seeing already a return to the ugliest aspects of “trendy” mid-80s fashions. Soon I expect, on all pieces of clothing, raised embellishments of thick neon-colored paints; the return of cut/slashed/torn/altered sweat-shirts; mesh fabric layering; plaid; large polkadots; and I theorize for sheer clown value, women wearing huge chunky expensive designer leg-warmers above high-heels and below dresses with plenty of diagonal cuts. When this clown value fashion moment arrives, I will cheer for all the idiots dumb enough to buy into said look. ---

Since people seem to be going either towards ultra-skimpy, flesh-baring clothes or flouncy frilly things, I’m hoping that fashion trends move towards simplicity, and, dare I say…a little bit of elegance? There’s nothing I love more seeing on a guy than a nice pair of pants and a solid-color button-down shirt. Yum. ---
