> I wonder how much of this Canada uproar stems from that picture of Trudeau, Macron, and somebody else (UK?) standing around laughing at him during presidency #1. He definitely strongly dislikes Trudeau and Macron. It’s all about revenge for him anyway.

And that picture of Melania giving Trudeau that ‘Come hither’ look.

It’s not all revenge, he thinks that expansion of the USA by stealing and destroying other countries will make him look like a great man. But a lot of it is revenge and vengence.

There is no chance Trump is actually going to make a move on Canada. And if he did, it would instantly be the most-defied order in US military history.

Is Trump literally all alone on this? I don’t recall hearing even his most sycophantic kiss-ass supporters saying “let’s get Canada!” So when Trump realizes that, it’ll be option A: he’ll declare victory and STFU about Canada.

No, almost all of his supporters are fully on board with despoiling Canada.

You’d think they’d be all over Fox News, rallying support.

I just had an image of Trump drawing his saber, saying “Let’s go boys, let’s get those hockey-loving mo-fo’s! Forth Eorlingas! Once more unto the breach, dear friends! Who’s with me??!” …

No; there’s a very good chance he’ll have Canada conquered. And i expect near total, enthusiastic compliance with the order. And not just with the order to attack, but with the order to commit systematic atrocities agaisnt the Canadian populace afterwards. Expect a _tremendous_ amount of rapes, torture and random murders during the occupation.

Apparently, the outcome of Trump’s Canada obsession is “Liberals go from a 1% chance of winning the next election to roughly two-thirds”.

Quite possibly the greatest electoral comeback in Canadian history.

Granted, the conservatives have helped the Liberals out by running a terrible campaign.

Yes, but Peter Rabbitskin (aka Pierre Poilièvre) is catching on. He insulted Trump who then declared that the Liberals are much more reasonable then the Conservatives. The ad based on that has likely cost Carney a few hundred thousand votes. Running against Trump is a winning line.

It’s predictable enough. Trump is repulsive to most people outside his cult (why _they_ like him is harder to understand), and his rhetoric and actions against Canada gives them a reason to _care_ about that. I expect using Trump as a political pinata for votes is going to be popular in Canada for a long time, barring a war making it moot.

Pierre Poilievre’s own fault. He defined himself YEARS ago as a right wing populist anti-liberal attack dog. And was riding that high when Trudeau was suffering from voter fatigue. After awhile Trudeau was forced out (his resignation was no surprise), but PP didn’t realign off of antiTrudeau-ism. Enter Trump’s ascendancy and his attacks towards Canada.

PP didn’t realign AT ALL. He stayed on the antiTrudeau target train talking SOLELY about how Trudeau recessed Parliament (irrelevant to everyone, but the Tories who wanted to call a snap election). Nothing shook him off him off target. He blew that 25 point lead. A historic majority poof.

Compare this to the Ontario Tory leader and Premier Doug Ford. Ford (an otherwise incompetent buffoon) immediately recognized the danger MONTHS ago and ran to the defence of his province’s industries (and then called a snap election to snag a third majority). He played the situation to his benefit by overtly talking tough to Trump. Doing that daily. And doing it publicly.

PP couldn’t and wouldn’t do half of that. He was a poodle to all, but Trudeau.

Does he really not know that the US-Canadian border was decided by a treaty, not just some guy with a fucking ruler? He repeats this embarrassing bit of ignorance for the world to see, and nobody says a thing. He keeps the zone well flooded, that’s for sure.

Probably not. More importantly he doesn’t respect treaties. If Canada can’t stop Trump from taking what he wants, then Canada has no right to it. “The strong do what they can, the weak suffer what they must” is the new order.

I endorse @Tired_and_Cranky in full with one narrow exception.

> [@Tired\_and\_Cranky](#):
>
> But also in the meantime, Russia will have rebuilt its military…

Russia has an economy the size of Mexico and any defense buildup is tied closely to the world price of oil. They are hostile if prices are high, less so when prices are low. As of now, there are no indications that the country is ready to develop away from its resource-extractive/middle income status.

But I have a strong forecast for the US, “Muddling though,” over invasion. If invasion occurs, Greenland and Panama are more natural targets: they would fall before Canada does. Canada and Europe need to think carefully about what they would do if the US invades Panama.

These war scenarios are disgusting and reflect character flaws in the American body politic as well as fundamental misunderstandings in the nature of foreign policy even among experts. Because these developments were not anticipated.

Foreign policy is only indirectly connected with national interest. The Realist school of foreign policy is grounded on the least real assumptions. In actual reality, foreign policy is an extension of domestic political struggles. Furthermore perceptions of foreign powers are impressionistic at home. The US is significantly more insular than most countries and feels less direct penalty for bad foreign relations, so relying on it as trusted partner is incredibly naive. Incredibly, and universally up to 2 months or 2 years ago.

ETA: From there it follows that China could enter crazy-land as well. Autocratic regimes are brittle after all. So the best strategy for most countries is diversification. And the best strategy for their citizenry is to support democracy and human rights, and not to assume that they are a given among currently democratic countries.

ETA2: Fascism is self-limiting because their policies fail, but not fast enough to eliminate substantial damage along the way.

Yeah. Trump is the sort of man who believes what he wants to believe, and doesn’t so much as try googling the actual facts. Facts are for lesser beings.

I consume more right wing media and social media than most around here. I have seen zero support for any kind of military action. There’s a lot of “Trump is so smart. He knows how to negotiate.” When it comes to how Trump thinks he should run the country I always run it through a couple of filters. The main one is Trump’s ego. He thinks he’s a great president because he didn’t get the country into any wars. His ego wants that to continue. The other filter is how he thinks government should be run like a business. Diplomacy doesn’t exist only tough negotiation that puts you on top. There are no allies only competitors. He doesn’t want to invade Canada. He wants to win the economic competition.
