Have you got a different version from everyone else? Or is this an in joke?

Mind you, I discovered there are plenty of versions around. I knew that the lines I gave above were not the ones I belt out at karaoke.

Here they are:

‘Close your eyes -
Start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
**Close your eyes and let music set you free
Only then can you belong to me**’

I feel a lot better now.

The rhyme in question is from later in the show. I was snarking on the general schmaltziness, cheese, and poor quality of _Phantom_’s lyrics.

Yeah, well reserve judgement until you hear my rendition at _The Big Echo_. Full of passion. And very loud. For some reason, everyone else chooses this moment to visit the bathroom.

> I’ve never interpreted the clapping as being for the performance of the Star-Spangled Banner or some spontaneous overflow of patriotic passion, but rather because the ballgame’s about to start.

I’ve seen it happen at other events, too. Especially at graduation cerimonies.

> I think it’s the same reason that karaoke is pushing out live music in clubs all over the place. People today have this need to feel like they’re “participating” instead of “spectating”. The entire country has ADHD.

> As far as applauding the MC and the sponsors, etc, you have to admit that the MC encourages this.

I have noticed that at concerts and public performances, that people seem only to enjoy themselves only if other people are _seeing_ them enjoying. Many concerts I have been to are full of people who have to holler and scream at the performers (who can’t see or hear them anyway) and then look around at the spectators around them with a goofy grin. They constantly are slapping and high-fiving their friends during the performance. They are calling constantly on their cellphones to tell people where they are and what is going on.

This isn’t because they are enthused about the concert or caught up in it. They need to be seen and heard having fun by others. If someone else doesn’t see how much fun they are having, then it isn’t fun for them. These people constantly talk and scream over the artist performing and really don’t seem to care about the concert at all.

Personally, I go to a concert to hear the artist perform. There is a time for applause and congradulatory actions when the performer has stopped. I hate people who are applauding or whistling or cat-calling or any conspicuous act while the performance is going on. Jeez - let the artist do what we all came hear to hear them do and sit down and STFU!

Oh boy, do I understand your frustration with this! Last year, I went to see Rush in concert in Seattle. I have been a Rush fan since around 1980, and this band has had more influence on my own musical development than any other artist. I am a bass player because of Geddy Lee. Despite all this, I had never managed to see them live until last summer, on their 30th Anniversary tour.

Needless to say, I was extremely excited to be there. I was extremely excited to **finally** get to watch my musical heroes perform live.

It was a wonderful experience, despite the fact that I had only been able to afford the cheapest tickets, way in the back, on the grass, in the rain. I didn’t even notice the rain, I was so happy.

It was finally time for Neil Peart’s drum solo. He began to solo…

… and the woman behind me began to bellow.

**"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH! NEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSS! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH! NEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH! YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAH! NEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIL!"**

At the top of her voice. All the fucking way through the drum solo. Until then it had never occured to me that a lone woman could drown out a drum solo with her unamplified voice. I guess it’s true - you **do** learn something new every day.
