Well, it’s hard to find the two-layer fish. And this is a crumby little market in a part of town with a high homeless population. Stores like that do tend to be more expensive. Anyway, the Bumble Bee ones (which I’ve just added soy sauce and Sriracha to and am preparing to eat) were only $1.69.
I hope you enjoy them!!!
Yum.
Growing up, my dad would boil them in soy sauce and sugar. I’m sure there was water too since it wasn’t that salty. The sweet and savory of the sardines was always a favorite of mine.
So I mainly eat them straight from the can, although I’m now I’m seriously going to try them with the soy sauce and shiracha. I’m drooling just thinking about it.
To the person that said they toast them over an open fire. Is it only the fresh ones or can you use canned ones also? If you use the canned ones, how do you keep them from falling apart? Is there a brand that’s firmer or something? I usually buy Brunswick or Crown Prince myself. If it’s fresh, where do you find them? (I’ve never noticed them for sale here) Average deli and just ask or do you have to find a fish market or something?
Just the fresh ones
Fresh off the boat of course Failing that, it’s got to be a good quality fishmonger.
Picked up some King Oscar last night. Two cans labeled “cross-packed” and two cans labeled “two-layer.”
And some crackers, so I’m ready to give that a try.
Oh, a good use (and to shock unwary friends) for the canned variety is to use them as a pizza topping. Yum or blech, your choice
make a little antipasto plate to go with it, some capers, pickle, thin sliced onion, hot mustard, or pepper sauce, olives, triscuits, cheese (cheddar/havarti) a cold beer. Dinner!
I too love the saltie fishies, a jar of anchovies does not last a day when I’m around.
