Anyone born with the name Washington or Lincoln is probably African-American, and probably one, unlike Obama, brought up in that culture and speaking with at least some trace of Ebonics. Which could be a problem.

We had Mayor Harold Washington in Chicago. He kind-of sort-of ran for President as a favorite son in 1984, winning 35 delegates whom he eventually turned over to Jesse Jackson, after Walter Mondale had already wrapped up the nomination.

Badly. Reagan was popular, the country wasn’t ready for an African American President, and even if it had been, Washington was not a national figure. He wasn’t really running for President, he just wanted to have some delegates and be a power broker on the off chance that there was a brokered convention. Alas, even in 1984 brokered conventions were a fantasy.

There’s a perpetual candidate in Arizona who changed his name to Cesar Chavez in an attempt to get more votes. Looks like it hasn’t been especially successful so far.
