Presidential candidate named Washington, Lincoln, etc.

It’s like a fucking Welsh regiment in here . . .

Tell that to former Senator Blanche Lincoln.

We had Mayor Harold Washington in Chicago. He kind-of sort-of ran for President as a favorite son in 1984, winning 35 delegates whom he eventually turned over to Jesse Jackson, after Walter Mondale had already wrapped up the nomination.

If he had gotten the nomination, how do you think he would have done in the general?

Badly. Reagan was popular, the country wasn’t ready for an African American President, and even if it had been, Washington was not a national figure. He wasn’t really running for President, he just wanted to have some delegates and be a power broker on the off chance that there was a brokered convention. Alas, even in 1984 brokered conventions were a fantasy.

As that article pointed out, that’s been done before. Not exactly creative.

There’s a perpetual candidate in Arizona who changed his name to Cesar Chavez in an attempt to get more votes. Looks like it hasn’t been especially successful so far.
