Pretend you're me: Which apt to rent? (Bonus pts for Chicagoans)

Congrats. Of course, as far as I’m concerned, you’re way out in the boonies. Whadja do that for?

Yeah, it’s pretty far up there, but I like it and hope I like living there, assuming the state of MN lets me out, of course.

It sounds like you got everything you were looking for - very nice.

Woot! Top floor is always a bonus. I really wasn’t sure about mine because it’s the 3rd floor, but really 4 flights up, and I had always lived in elevator buildings before. It’s fine, though, and I just stop at the store after work a couple nights a week instead of making big shopping trips. The extra stairs are SO worth not having anyone walking over my head!

You’ll probably like having the huge kitchen. I love mine, and it’s big enough to fit my table with the leaf in it, and seat six comfortably. It’s great for cooking, it’s extra counter space for bowls and ingredients!

Happy moving, I hope moving day goes smoothly. Check out Yelp reviews for Move-Tastic! I used them last May and was very impressed with the three man crew who moved me. They would meet your moving truck and unload for you when you get here! Book now, though, May 1st is one of the busiest moving times in Chicago, it may be difficult to get an appointment. If the new place is empty now, you might see if you can move in the middle of the week, early. It’s so much easier and I did that with my last three places. Only works if the place is already empty, though!

Seriously! And you can’t get mad at people for living their lives, but I lived under people once, and every time the above tenant walked around I thought “Sit down!” I learned then that I am not capable of living on anything but the top floor.

I have an elevator in the building I’m moving into, but even if I didn’t, it’s still worth it. I don’t plan on using the elevator unless I’m carrying heavy items, anyway, as my legs are faster than the elevator. I’m more impatient than I am lazy.

Thanks! How much are they? I went to their website, and they wanted me to piss in a cup for a quote. My plan was to put an ad to pay some college kids on Craig’s List, but if I can find a reputable service that won’t flake on me to do a good job, I’d prefer that. I need them to unload only. I’m going to pay my Mpls friends to load with love and beer, and will drive the U-Haul down myself.

Congrats!

I paid them last year I think $550, and it was a 5-hour move from one third floor place with tiny elevator and long walk from back of building to street, to another “third” floor walk-up, three guys, and I was the second move for them that day. From the reviews I’m seeing in Yelp, their prices may have gone up since then, but if they’re just meeting you and unloading I’ll bet it would be under $300 unless you have a crazy amount of stuff. I think they charge $99/hour plus a travel fee, which I’m not sure whether that applies if they’re not using a truck. I think the licensing/bonding/being careful with my stuff is worth the cash, though!

The online quote really is no obligation, they’re cool. It’s worth filling out the form to find out if they’re even available for the time you need. I moved last year the last week of May on a Thursday. I booked a month ahead and they were already not available that whole Friday-Monday weekend.

Holy crap. I have three weeks, so I hope they can help. I filled out their form. If they can’t help, kids from Craig’s List it is.

Yeah, top floor is a definite for apartment living. Good find and congrats on finding a place! Enjoy chicago.

Also. Thanks for coming back to the thread and letting us know. I always like getting some sort of closure in these decision threads. Even if I am guilty of not always coming back and letting people know which way I chose when I open one. Do as I say not as I do.

As with everything, it is a double-edged sword. I like not having noise above me. But I also collect the heat from the entire building in the summer – it all rises up to settle in my apartment. Bleh.

Congrats!

I just moved and used Coffey Bros. Movers:

I had a great experience with them, and their Yelp reviews are also impressive.

Congrats;

My grandparental units lived in Portage Park. I loved it, especially the park with the fountains and pool and ice skating in the winter. Mrsin and I wanted to get married in the park there but the parental units nixed that idea right off.

I have many, many good memories of Portage Park, I hope you are happy there>

Congrats on the move. Welcome to the best city in America! Lincoln Park resident here.
