There’s another set of family names to add to the potential mix, don’t forget. Anyway, it’s none of my business.
That is so adorable. ![]()
True, but that other family’s naming conventions are far less predictable than the royals. We’re making safe guesses!
And there’s a little Earl of Dumbarton.
Is there a name guessing thread somewhere or shall we hijack this one for that purpose? I guessed Louis last year so I’m doing alright.
It’d be nice if one of his (probably) 4 names is John after Diana’s father.
I’m reasonable confident no-one would have guessed ![]()
Hello, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. A good solid name is Archie - it’s a bit of a classic “Old Scottish man in pub wearing a bunnet” one.
Well, unconventional it is! Harrison indeed, that’ll cause mumblings down the polo club.
Archy Mehitabel Mountbatten-Windsor.
Holy crow. I did NOT see that coming.
(Didn’t read the whole thread.)
Why won’t Archie have a title? Or does that mean he won’t have a “royal” title (Prince, Highness, etc.)? Surely, he’ll be the Duke of Something-or-Other. He’s not going to be “Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor,” is he? Besides, without a title, won’t he be jealous of his titled cousins? Someone 'splain this to me, please.
It’s up to the parents (and the Queen has to approve and do the paperwork). He won’t be a Duke, but he could pick up one of Harry’s secondary titles - the Earl of Dumbarton, most likely. It’s not guaranteed if he’ll be made a Prince either eg Princess Anne’s children don’t have any titles at all.
I read in one article that he won’t have a title-- that’s why I asked. I didn’t realize that Princess Anne’s children don’t have titles. The whole title thing is very confusing…
Back when Anne had kids it was only the grandchildren of the Monarch through the male line that were automatically in the frame for titles*. Queen Elizabeth offered courtesy titles, but Anne and her then-husband Mark declined the offer. I think they wanted the children to have as normal lives as possible and indeed, while Zara is pretty well-known in her own right, I doubt one in a hundred Brits could identify Peter in a police line-up.
- I’m not sure if that’s still the case
If there’s such a thing as the Duke of Riverdale, I hope they give it to Archie.
Not Archibald, just Archie?
And a middle name taken from a Beatle. Good choice, Harry and Megs.
Harrison meaning Harry’s Son - I only just got that.
There are two separate issues. The first is that of the peerage titles. His father’s title of Duke of Sussex will pass to him when Harry dies. The eldest son of a duke (royal or non-royal) is also normally known by his father’s second most senior title, which in this case is Earl of Dumbarton. So he was officially Earl of Dumbarton from the moment he was born.
The unrelated issue is whether he will ever be Prince and HRH. That’s more complicated. Basically those titles (and their female equivalents) are given to the monarch’s children, the children of the monarch’s sons and the children of the eldest son of the monarch’s eldest son. Since Harry is merely the younger son of the monarch’s eldest son, his children don’t qualify. Yet. Because, in due course, he will become the son of a monarch, once his Dad becomes King. Then Archie will become a Prince and an HRH. Or, then again, perhaps not. Prince Edward asked that his children not be given the title and it seems possible that Harry might end up doing the same. Indeed, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Charles III decided to mark his new reign with a tightening of the rules. The usual view is that he is keen to side-line the more minor royals, so this would be a fairly obvious way of symbolising that.
With Princess Anne, part of the issue was whether her first husband would receive a peerage, which would have accorded various titles to her children. Much in the way that Princess Margaret’s children got titles from the fact that their father had been given an earldom.
Very informative! How come you know so much about this subject?
I didn’t think he would be Prince or HRH. I thought he might have some other title besides “Mr.”
There’s got to be an English bookie who is facing a big payout to someone acting on behalf of someone for correctly picking the name.
I was thinking that when he grows up he can keep the germination records for the Royal Orchid Collection. And more generally jump and grab things before the other Royal Families can get their paws on them. (Although, in a “constitutional monarchy” like they have in the UK, having someone to act as the thorn in the seat of the Royal Family’s chair, to keep them from going to sleep and waking up only for meals, could be sort of problematic. The last thing you would want is somebody who constantly goads the British Royals into activity!)
