I pay little attention to the British royal family except when their actions threaten world peace or when I can look at “Princess” Kate, but when she and that doofus she married named their kid Louis it caught my attention. Is it their intention to renew Britain’s claim to the throne of France, and is giving him a proper Bourbon name a sop to French royalists to grease the wheels? I am concerned that won’t fly because the British royals only started liking the French royals back in Scarlet Pimpernel times and only after most had been executed, and the French might see right through it. In that case, will this trigger a second Hundred Years War or will the French cave because they want a hottie like Kate to be their queen, too?

I dismiss any suggestions the name refers to granny’s favorite uncle, Louie Mountbatten, because Kate has sucked up to her enough by not being Camilla.

I’m not sure who you mean by Granny (Queen Elizabeth II?), but she is not the one who had the relationship with Louis Mountbatten, who is related on Prince Philip’s side. Mountbatten was Prince Charles’ favorite uncle; they were extremely close, and he was assassinated. Charles gave his own son, Willliam, the name Louis (William Arthur Philip Louis) in Mountbatten’s memory, and William also gave the name to his first son (George Alexander Louis). The evidence is overwhelming that William is continuing the tradition of honoring Mountbatten by keeping the name in the family with Prince Louis (Louis Arthur Charles).

I’m no royalist but I’m not sure what William has done to deserve being called a doofus. I think his dad is a colossal dick but he seems like a nice guy, Army, RAF search and rescue pilot, helicopter ambulance pilot. In fact both the brothers seem as well adjusted as royals could be. Harry served in harms way in Afghanistan is clearly devoted to his services charity work and they both come across as good ambassadors for the country.

I’m not in favour of the royals but if you consider our head of state is our prime ambassador then both Liz 2 and William seem well up to the task (but not Charles, the man’s an idiot)

It damn well better be, I’m sick of them Frenchies sitting in Brittany like it’s theirs.

They sit there all happy with their nicer country and superior cuisine but we’ll see who’s laughing when King Louie claims the throne and forces them to move to our shitty, rainy island and eat jellied eels!

I’ve never got what people have against Prince Charles, he always seemed nice to me, if a bit of a tree hugger.

Well, Lyndon Larouche thinks the Queen is the world’s largest drug dealer.

Probably 1936 or so, when the King was pretty close to being a Nazi sympathiser.

How about the suggestion that it’s a common name in use in the house of Windsor for the last several decades?

Bah! “House of Windsor?” It is to laugh! A royal house literally named after their house when they decided to pretend they weren’t German.

In 1936, Edward VIII was the King and Stanley Baldwin was the Prime Minister.

In 1937, George VI was the King and Baldwin was still the Prime Minister.

This illustrates who holds the real power in the United Kingdom. A member of the British royal family can’t be a threat to world peace because they no longer have the power to do anything of significance.

Well King Charles III can always change it to the House of Mountbatten like Great-Uncle Louis wanted. Hell he could even change it to Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg if he so pleased.

Or how about Victoria’s family name [Guelf (see the last addendum)](https://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/884/what-did-prince-andrew-39-s-superiors-in-the-royal-navy-call-him/) (which I expect is a variation on Welf), or even “Wettin” or “Wipper”, wherever in hell that one came from.
