This isn’t really correct, though. Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry wasn’t playing a male character. She was playing a biologically female character who wanted to be an FTM transsexual and “passed” as a male as far as external appearance went.
Mary Martin as Peter Pan may have won a Tony pretending she had a dick, but Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry won an Oscar pretending to be somebody with a vagina who wished she had a dick.
