In my never ending quest to find a Prince Rupert’s Drop, I happened to stumble on the following conversation:

Can someone tell me what type of “catalog” has these things?

::Bump::

I’m curious about this as well. I’ve heard of these, but I’ve never seen a demonstration.

Kind of bumping this too, but I’ll add a little context.

In [Dippy little question about “Oscar and Lucinda”](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=41660) **sethdallob** asked for the name of these glass objects, which reminded me of the novel and the object as well as allowing me a shortcut in **oldscratch** ’s [The Brand Spanking New Harvey Keitel Penis Game](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=41620). **Celyn** ’s answer to sethdallob also enabled me to discover that the fabulous [Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable](http://www.bibliomania.com/Reference/PhraseAndFable/index.html) is online at bibliomania.

Now awaiting further tidbits from this happy line of enquiry. 🙂

This sounds like the type of thing you might find in a science catalog.

I made some many years ago. I melted the end of a glass rod and let the drops fall into motor oil. Most of the ones that hardened into teardrops with a little tail would perform properly. I used an oxyacetylene torch but a propane torch might work.

Sorry to bring this to the top again, but there were afew people who were interested in finding these, and, like an idiot, I deleted their email address. With a little help from a few science teachers, I found them, and they are surprisingly cheap! A pack of 12 is $31 with shipping.
