Princess Diana: Was Anyone to Blame?

Almost 10 years after the accidental death of Princess Diana, were criminal charges ever brought upon any one(s)?

The French initially charged some motorcycle papparazzi with a “good samaritan” law, for taking photos instead of helping, but IIRC the charges were dropped. That’s it as far as I know.

At least you didn’t put “accidental” in quotes.

Both English and French authorities have reopened the case, and a report is expected in 2007, mostly in response to the number of people who believe “accident” belongs in quotes when making statements about it. Note also that blame and actual criminal charges are different issues, and the first is highly debateable. I don’t believe any of the second have occured. The driver certainly would have been charged if he had lived, since it is generally acknowledged that he was drunk. They didn’t charge any of the paparazzi, who probably share blame with the driver, whether or not they actually did anything illegal.

I suppose I should more correctly say that the papparazi were initially arrested by the French police and charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the charges were quickly dropped. It didn’t reach the courts, in any case.

Some medical experts argued that French medical treatment was too slow and essentially backward, and that a US approach–quickly extricating her from the wreckage and rushing her to an ER–might have saved her life.

So would have a seatbelt.

That’s the real issue IMHO.
