Prisoners build computers from canabalized parts; tap into state network.

Why is this impressive? There are likely lots of hackers behind bars and hiding things in prison seems to have been a norm for a long time. Cobbling PC parts together is what many of us PC enthusiasts do anyways. Even educating yourself to hack among many other things is as easy as it is on the outside. The exception here being they had to physically hide what they were doing.

What is/was impressive was that anyone actually escaped Alcatraz, probably didn’t live but hey.

Possibly more. Being caught and imprisoned doesn’t mean you are stupid. It just might have been due to an unlucky accident, a chink in your armor, or a bug in your bonnet.

I wouldn’t be surprised if one or more of those involved isn’t there because of computer crimes.
