Thank you, Mr. Visible for bringing this to my attention. I used the “hand delivery” option on congress.org. Not that my Georgia Reps are likely to be swayed, but what the hell.
Heck, I’ll write to Vanilla Ice.
Ashamedly, I do not even know who my reps are.
I will go check that link.

Dear Senator/Representative Blank,
The Constitution is not meant to be used for domestic policy issues. That lesson should have been learned after Prohibition.
However, it appears that this lesson has not been learnt, as various people are proposing a Amendment limiting marriage to a man and a woman.
Regardless of what you personally feel about the issue, please prevent this from being added to the Constitution, or every crank of the left and right will shove their pet cows into the Constitution, progressively damaging it as the go.
Signed,
Governor Quinn
Gay man checking in.
Been with my lover for almost 23 years now.
I personally think marriage should remain between men and women because it sucks and doesn’t seem to work - what, 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce anyway.
I like the idea of a neutral-sounding “domestic-partners” agreement. Equal in every respect, more legally binding and takes a bigger commitment to sign because it is not just a ceremony with cake, it is a partnership that is based on love, logic and laws.
If you want to celebrate it with a religious ceremony, or with a party with friends, fine.
We would like to go to a court, sign the papers, and not worry that homophobic Uncle Earl will rip off the spouse after one of us dies.
The majority of Americans seem to think “marriage” is for heterosexuals, but in recent polls, the majority also have nothing against domestic partnerships.
As Gay men, aren’t we clever enough to come up with our “own” celebration?
Give me the legal right to partnership and tell me it is not “marriage”. Fine with me.
I’ll call it “Mannige”, or “Partnership” or whatever.
They want to keep marriage “hetero”? Fine.
Just give me the same rights and call it whatever the fuck you want.
DMark, just out of curiosity, would the type of legalised partnership you’re talking about be open to all, or just the homosexual “version” of what is currently called marriage ?
Could we please limit the arguments about the nature of homosexual marriage to the numerous threads in GD and the Pit about the subject?
This thread has only one purpose: to encourage people to write to their representatives and help keep them from writing discrimination into the Constitution of the United States.
Arguments about the details of this issue belongs elsewhere, please.
Apologies, MrVisible.
I will ask my question elsewhere.
If I was in your country, with the eligibility to vote – you’d have my support, folks. Hope you manage to knock this move to constitutionally discriminate against a sector of the population on the head. My thoughts are with you.
I’m going to echo Ice Wolf here – I’m not in the United States so I can’t write nor vote (only hope that you’ll vote the fucker out of the White House next year, and can I say ‘fucker’ here? It’s the nicest description I can come with at the moment), but I’m with all of you in my thoughts.
Good luck!
I’m really not pro-anybody.
But I do support state-recognized gay marriages.
I’m not in the US either, so all I can offer you all is moral support.
Which I do.
Does anyone think that there’s a snowball’s chance in hell of such an amendment actually seriously beginning the lengthy amendmentification process? I remember a big buzz from the right a while ago about a constitutional amendment to outlaw flag-burning, and that never went anywhere (thank God), although I’m not quite sure what happened to it… I assume that no one really took it seriously and it was just posturing, which I guess I’m hoping/assuming will be the case here as well.
If all else fails, you’re welcome up here!
Unless, of course, our government decides to backpedal and wimp out! [rolleyes/]

Great thread MrVisible Good luck to all.
I just sent three letters.
Straight guy here. I’m very worked up about this issue. I agree completely with what Jackelope said in his letter - this issue will eventually be looked on the same as other civil rights issues. And we will be ashamed in hindsight.
It amazes and horrifies me that it took us so long to pass BASIC civil rights legislation, and that it was done only in the 1960’s. Lately I want to scream out, “Haven’t we learned anything?!”
I believe my rep is a Democrat.
My senator, however, is Rick Santorum. I cannot wait until 2006 so I can vote his smarmy ass out of office. I am so sorry. I did not elect this guy.
I can’t vote, nor am I an American.
But here’s hoping that the gay Voltron (it’s frosted pink) is able to overcome the dreaded Amendator.
Is there anything a non-citizen living in MA can do to help things along? Obviously, I’m nobody’s actual constituent, but I dearly wish to aid the gay rights cause, and of course am horrified at the possibility of a constitutional amendment barring gay marriages. (Got another year before I can become a citizen, or I’d be happy to write my congressperson.)
