A few months back there was speculation that New Orleans would like to have the Jazz name back in anticipation of the NFL expansion franchise.
One of the local reporters here in SLC jokingly said that we would be happy to give up the name Jazz, if they would let us have the Saints.
Los Angeles Dodgers is nonsensical now, since the team is named after people dodging trolleys in Brooklyn. I don’t think L.A. has trolleys, and you can’t dodge out of the way of a speeding Lexus quite as easily.
If the Montreal Expos retain the Expos name after moving, that of course will become nonsense, since they’re named after the Montreal '67 Expo.
“Arizona Cardinals” may be meaningless. Does Arizona have cardinals?
Memphis Grizzlies is a name that also has some local history. This was the name of our WFL team back in the 70s - the team had been the Toronto Northmen, then came to Memphis and renamed the Southmen, then they renamed themselves to Grizzlies to position themselves for entry into the NFL (which never happened - the players went, but the team didn’t).
hehe - the team name I always thought was most contradictory was our AA baseball team in the 70’s/80’s - the Memphis Chicks…
Never saw a single woman play for 'em the entire time the team was here

“Hornets” actually has some connection to Charlotte, as well. (I read this recently, don’t have the cite, a thousand pardons.) As some Union Army was marching through North Carolina, the commanding officer said that the constant sniper-esque harassment from the locals made it like walking through a hornet’s nest. Not being from Charlotte, I have no idea whether that quote is actually a continued source of local pride or if it just made a nice story when the NBA Hornets were leaving town. (And of course “Hornets,” like “Grizzlies,” can make sense anywhere as a generally threatening animal mascot… )
Well, from a historical standpoint, Auntie, the Charlotte Hornets were a WFL team as well
As far as hornets being connected with Charlotte - I’ve been to North Carolina in the summer - them suckers are HUGE :).
