A good friend of mine calls me “prickly” - as in prickly like a porcupine, not prickly like a prick. “Better stay away from Barb; she’s extra-prickly today.” When provoked or pissed, I have no problem with throwing rather pointed verbal barbs. Plus it fits with my first name. ---

I got my nickname from my best friend. She was convinced that I looked like a monchichi while I was growing my hair out. (It was shaved) I had it dyed blue at the time so I became bluemonchichi. Monchichi’s are cartoon characters for those of you who don’t know. My name comes from the Superman comics I read when I was a lad. Mr Mxyzptlk is an imp from another dimension who occasionally made his way to Metropolis and bedeviled Superman with jokes and tricks, some of which ended up being pretty nasty. And the only way Superman could get rid of him was by making Mr M say his name backwards…It just seemed like a good name to use ---

I’ve told the short version over at MPSIMS, but many of you don’t hang out there so maybe it’ll be new for someone. After a layoff I spent nine months as, um, a consultant. Short for unemployed draftsman willing to knock himself out on an irregular basis to augment the unemployment. During a period where it looked like I could actually make a living at it I mentally formed a company–unlike corporations you can form a one-person company in your head–and named it Dropzone Engineering because I was going through a “parachuting looks like fun” phase. The work was going to go in and out of a large-but-free email account at [About.com](http://About.com), so I started the and named it, well, you know what I named it. A couple months later I discovered the SDMB. I had to create a profile to tell some people that The Simpsons was NOT going off the air. This was going to be a one-timer of shooting off my mouth and I didn’t want to use my real name, which is my name for all my other email accounts, and the dropzone account was sitting idle so I used it for my email and handle. I have never liked it. Then again, I’ve never been that fond of my REAL name. ---

So there I was… …Niagra Falls… …no, wait. I was there, in front of my brand-spanking-new computer. With the wrong drivers. I’ve got 640x480 resolution, 16 colors. I’m screwed. Unless… I can download the drivers! Alas, I have no online account. But, wait! What’s this under my coffee mug! A coaster! No, wait. Wrong mug. There! Yet another f##king AOL CD I hadn’t yet gotten around to throwing away. So I plug it in, it installs, and I proceed to set up an account. Now, I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I couldn’t be Eddie28462. I am not a number! I _must_ find a name that no one has thought of before. How about… …fifteen minutes later, I’m still plugging in attempts. The dictionary comes out. Fifteen minutes later, the dictionary goes hurtling over my shoulder. Still nothing. Feh. There are no good names left. And then the idea hits me. There’s this little technique for typing things upside-down. For instance: It’s upside-down! —\> iuMop-aP!sdn s,fI Maybe all the good _right-side-up_ names have been taken, but I’m willing to bet no one has taken all the good upside-down names! So I pick through some of the names I had tried before that had been rejected, looking for ones with better letter combinations, and I see it: Spellbound. Spellbound upside-down. Even sounds kinda kinky. I like it. I take it. So, the name has kinda stuck. I mean, how likely is it there’s more than one Punoqllads out there? ---
