Cleaning my room today I came accross 2 thank you notes for graduation gifts I recieved in December. I thought I’d mailed these months ago, but obviously they got misplaced. Now I’m like 5 months overdue with these 2.

I am planning on them out Monday with a note explaining how I just lost them. Is this alright? Should I do anything else? I feel real bad about not sending out these, especially since I didn’t even have a graduation party and still got these gifts. How bad will this make me look?

How bad? On my scale, not too bad. Might make me chuckle, even. If you _found_ them, I’d send them out. If you hadn’t written them yet, I’d say don’t bother. But clearly there was intent to mail. So I’d say to add a post script apologizing for the lateness and explaining the delay. If they don’t like it, too bad–you _did_ thank them.

I did…they asked me about it. I told them they most have got lost in the mail, and made out new ones and sent to them.

I’d send 'em out with the ps – “Here they are, they finally resurfaced in my room” – I think it’s pretty funny, and suspect the recipients will as well.

Not bad at all. Late thanks is better than no thanks. I’ve written thank you’s months later when I’ve finally gotten a chance to use the gift - not that it’s my policy to wait I just get sidetracked easily. The people have always been happy to hear, even if late that their gift was appreciated.

That reminds me of a joke I heard where a bride and groom received a very late wedding gift: an ice cream maker from a friend, five years after the wedding. The gift card read: “Just wanted to make sure the marriage would last.”

Five years later the bride mailed a thank you note to the friend who had sent the ice cream maker. The note read: “Just wanted to make sure the ice cream maker would last.”

For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t find this all that funny.

I commend the OP be so responsible and caring about this. (I admit that I probably would’ve said “screw it”) I think it would be really nice to go out and buy two BIGGER cards and enclose the thank you cards in them (thank you cards are normally little; I don’t mean buy two GIANT cards), with a note saying explaing that to your horror, you just found these and thanks again and sorry about the length of time and all that.

This is one of those things that may seem like overkill and probably isn’t necessary but it can really make an impression on someone else that you are a total class act. I don’t think you can ever be too gracious when it comes to thank yous.
