**Does** height affect a man’s career?

Compare platform shoes and toupees with diet and exercise.

For men, the methods to “improve” their physical appearance in career-altering ways not only don’t work well or usually at all, but are likely to cause more embarrassment and bad appearance than doing nothing.

If there was a real way to increase height similar to diet and exercise, it would indeed be talked about all the time. The difference is simply that (most) women have options and men don’t. So women talk about those options. It is both a blessing and a curse, and it is debatable which sex has it “better.”

Not exclusively “a chick thing”…you are saying that, not me.

Never said it was “okay” either way, but that seems to be the predominating factor whether it (internalizing v. discussing) is good or bad. I can give examples where internalizing for men can be good or bad and I can give examples where discussing/advising can be good or bad.

Example: Watching a friend going through some addiction…where discussing/advising is a better solution to help that friend rather than internalizing it and giving the impression that nothing is wrong. I know that one first hand and I’m pretty sure that many others can attest to that too.

One one hand, it makes somebody feel good that someone cared and did something for him/her, but then it does become expected and can become burdensome to remember everyone’s birthday and not to slight somebody when it gets forgotten. I get that. My wife and I run a business together for the last 19 years, and guess who feels they have to get the gifts for everyone’s birthday and try to remember all of them, and gets upset when _she_ forgets and vice-versa?

And this coming from a man who employs about 50 women and 10 men. I’ve seen this pattern played out, year after year after year.

No one is saying that men and women are polar opposites, that traits are exclusively male or female, but I do think ‘a chick thing’ is fundamentally the same as ‘women feel the need .. generally speaking …’.

In my experience, women do talk about personal issues more readily than men. But we like to do this with our friends, not our professional associates.

I don’t want to discuss my weight, sex life, family issues, with professional associates; I want to discuss regulations and educational opportunities. The forum in question in a professional one.

And another thing, I do not want anyone mentioning my birthday at work; my personal milestones I share with my friends and family. I don’t even want brownies when I get a new certification. I do not like imposing personal expectations in the work place.

I think balding would be a good comparison.

Could you imagine a professional workshop that right along with “salary negotiations” and “running effective meetins” had sessions on hair transplants, how to make an effective combover, and Rogaine?

Of course not. Stop pretending like you would ever see this.

Nice try, but the OP explicitly stated that body language is on topic. Body language. To me, that’s in exactly the same category as men’s hair (eg: ditch the toupee / cut the ponytail and get a big-boy haircut) and women’s weight.

So no, I couldn’t see the hair discussion alongside the topics you mention, but in equal measure I couldn’t see: (quoted from the OP)

body language during negotiations

work life balance
emotional intelligence
sociological studies on the difference between men and women
body language

The second board sounds like weight issues would be 100% on-topic. Weight issues sound like that board’s wheelhouse. Emotional intelligence?!

You rant on and on and on about your one significant ( and I agree, it is significant ) peeve and you know what? There’s no fucking way in hell I would hire you. Not for the job you have now. Not for a job that is less demanding and pays less.

You speak as though you are a professional who made it through undergraduate school. If you do not know the difference between “hire” and “higher”, I don’t really care one bit if you have a vagina or a penis. You are utterly worthless to the business world.

Learn to spell or get back to the 9th grade where you should have learned to spell. Using “Spell Check” and “Grammar Check” doesn’t do a damned thing for you in the eyes of your colleagues who actually know how to use the English language properly. “Higher” is the word you should have used in the context of your sentence. Had you made a simple typo such as entering in " hiher" or “highger” or somesuch, well we all make mistakes and even on Preview things get missed. You didn’t do that.

The only thing you did is show all of us that you struggle with a level of illiteracy that is appalling in the business world.

Get off of the Professional Fora and complete your education.

“Effective combovers”? Seriously? You think that is a good comparison?

You think wearing platform shoes and a toupee is equivalent to genuinely getting in better shape?

If there were effective ways to gain height and go from bald to having great hair, men would talk about them. As it is, there are no such effective methods, and what poor methods there are often look worse than doing nothing.

The fact that platform shoes, combovers, and toupees even exist proves you wrong. If men are willing to do such ridiculous things for so little (or negative) gain, imagine what they would do if there was an _effective_ method with no stigma attached.

Women talk about changing their appearance more because they have the blessing and curse of being able to truly change their appearance in important ways.

Weight loss may be different for women then men, eating patterns tied to their cycle, I know it does effect some along with mood swings. It is also seemingly far more common for women to talk about loosing weight then men\*, so it’s good that they are able to talk about it.

- Coke had to create Coke Zero partly because men didn’t want to admit they were on a diet by drinking a Diet Coke.

Now we’re in the Pit.

(Yes, I mis-spelled ‘higher’ as ‘hire’. My mistake. Fortunately, I am not typing in an application without spell-check at work.)

> Height discrimination is prejudice or discrimination against individuals based on height. In principle, it refers to the discriminatory treatment against individuals whose height is not within the normal acceptable range of height in a population. Various studies have shown it to be a cause of bullying, commonly manifested as unconscious microaggressions. Modern Western height discrimination originated in 19th century eugenic, Social Darwinist, and white supremacist movements, beginning wit Resea...

“These exceptions noted, in the great majority of cases a person’s height would not seem to have an effect on how well they are able to perform their job. Nevertheless, studies have shown that short people are paid less than taller people, with disparities similar in magnitude to the race and gender gaps.[9][10]”

Not really conclusive of anything but there seems to be some evidence that there is some sort of effect.

We are still talking about a standard of personal appearance. Are you saying that people imfer more from the fact someone is overweight than the fact someone is short?
