Some of the earliest SoCaS cases involved Bible reading . . . not whether Bible reading violated SoCaS but over whether they’d use a ‘’‘Protestant’‘’ Bible or the ‘’‘Catholic’‘’ Bible. (The earliest commonly cited, by Brennan in _Abington v. Schempp_, being _State ex rel. Weiss v. District Board, 76 Wisconsin 177 (1890)_, popularly known as [_The Edgerton Bible Case_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgerton_Bible_Case). I don’t think either party was expecting the court to hold that it was the Bible reading itself that was the actual problem. ---
