i don’t remember this scene, but are you saying that Bishop (human) appeared to suffer wounds that a real person could not possibly recover from? But also, if he was an android, per the canon he would be oozing white stuff, not red blood.

Well, they’ve been saying At the Mountains of Madness wasn’t made because Prometheus was, so this idea isn’t exactly new. To me, there are only superficial similarities. Scientific exploration encounters unknown alien life forms and people die. That’s about it.

And it’s obvious that the blogger had never read AtMoM, since he refers to the Old Ones as “humanoid.” They have radial symmetry and are more vegetable-like than human.

Really? Well then. Ignorance fought. 🙂

For what it’s worth, I think it’s better the other way, since it thematically makes a bit more sense. Ripley realizing, once and for all, that Weyland-Yutani would never be honest with her is stronger than Ripley ignoring the pleas of a severely injured dude.

So what came of the rumors during production that the Engineers were going to force the crew to have gay sex?

I wonder if realizing that having a squid facehugger result from that would send the wrong message, hence Shaw.

> And things got stranger from there. There was a leaked plot synopsis which as been somewhat derisively described as “Brokeback Alien”:
>
> What’s Playing reports (or reported) that these extra terrestrials, now known as “growers” are nomadic types who travel from one planet to another, terraforming it for their own purposes (which may well hint at the origin of the murderous xenomorphs). In the film, they encounter two male human slave farmers and use a form of mind control on them to force them to have sex. The suggestion is that the growers want their captives to procreate, but have rather got the wrong idea, being themselves a single sex species.
>
> Yep, you read that right. The rumour was that the script (worked on by Damon Lidelof of Lost) would feature mind-controlled gay sex. A lot of people focused on the “gay” aspect of that sentence, but I have to admit that any mind-controlled sex (and therefore, I suppose, rape – since it’s non-consensual) seems very “out there” for a mainstream science fiction. It doesn’t matter whether it’s male-on-male, male-on-female or female-on-female – it’s not exactly what you’d expect from a Hollywood film

I find it interesting they say the Engineers are a single sex species, and in the finished film they all appear male. I wonder if it is true and there are no female Engineers?

Well, of course it’s true! After all, they’re genetically identical to humans, and we don’t have females either!

Oh, wait…

(the more I find out about the thought processes behind the movie, the more I realize there really wasn’t any.)

There were GOOD ideas, just not followed through with enough logic. So sad, it could have been as good as or even better than Alien. ☹ The movie really did want to ask some Big Questions, but i don’t think the writer did a fucking good job of rounding out the ideas.
Damn, if i could go back and change things about Prometheus, as if i had a magic wand, here are a couple things i would do…and this is just my opinion so no one get too upset about it 🙂

1. Get rid of most of the current cast except Fassbender.

2. Get Richie out of the old man makeup, just get an older actor. Have him onboard from the beginning, don’t try to make his appearance some earth-shattering “reveal” because it’s not!

3. Script rewrite needs more quotable dialog, maybe even some humor. Not that Alien had any humor, but Aliens did. Albeit not much.

4. some kind of fucking plausible explanation about what the black goo is.

5. Some kind of plausible explanation from the Engineer as to why they want to destroy mankind.

6. Less stupid explorers. (seriously, the cobra-penis scene would have been more horrific if we actually LIKED the characters or sympathized with them).

7. No zombie-man unless it can be justified from deeper understanding of the black goo.

8)??? i’m sure there’s more 🙂

Finally saw it.

Holy shitballs, that was bad. I knew going in not to expect much because of the reactions I’d read here and elsewhere, but holy shitballs, that was BAD. I tried to relax and enjoy the ride, but I’d seen B-movies - no, it’s worse than that - I’ve seen movies given the MST3K-treatment that had better characters. Slap Zap Rowsdower down in the middle of this mess, and you’ve instantly got a better-written character with more life than anyone else sleepwalking through this disappointment.

To say the characters weren’t fleshed out would be an understatement. None of them had my interest or sympathy. OK, the woman who gave herself the c-section had my sympathy, because that was pretty insane, and because by that point she started having more screentime. I really had no idea what kind of people they were, and there was just the barest form of motivation. There was no CHARACTER in the characters.

I’ll be the umteenth person to say that they acted stupidly. Moreover, they seemed to act stupid without real reason. The only character that acted with any reason or sense was the guy who wanted Charlize Theron to immolate him. The captain and his bridge crew did the right thing at the end, but I have no idea why the short, desperate communication from caesarian-woman was convincing enough to get him to collide with the alien ship in a suicidal attempt to stop it.

Fassbender comes off best because, of all the blank slates that populated this movie, he was the only one who was SUPPOSED to be that way. OK, that’s not really fair. Even if the movie had properly fleshed out the other characters, he still would’ve come off looking good. How sad that the android was the most engaging character.

Prometheus continues the Alien tradition of having the alien life not quite make sense. Every time they make another movie, they fuck up the biology. The lizard things, the big tentacled flower-thing that killed the big alien near the end, the exploding alien head, the guy dissolving in the beginning of the movie after drinking the goo - I give up. If I gave it some thought, and maybe watched it again, perhaps I could make it all mostly kinda-sorta line up, but this movie didn’t earn that much effort from me.
