Pronounciation: Is ‘fenta-nawl’ the new ‘new-cue-lur’?

Well, with SEE-gars and UM-brellas, we’ve strayed a little from the correct “fentanyl” pronunciation. So may I rail against the two-syllable pronunciation of “veteran?”

Nobody throws a “lat-ral” pass or praises a “butt-ry” tasting biscuit. Why are veterans denied that extra little syllable, making them “vet-rans?”

But I do sometimes hear about something being powered by a “batt-ry.”

True. All too true. Nevertheless, I hear that approximately 1/50th as often as I hear about “vet-rans.”
