Pronunciation of the word "lich"

The lick lives in litchfield.

Ain’t English fun?

I’ve always heard it pronounced “litch”, as in a “lich gate” to a churchyard.

Huh, I’ve always prounounced it with the guttural -ch like in loch. Which turns out to be all kinds of wrong - if it’s cognate with lyk, lijk etc. then I think I’ll stick with “lick”, since the OE form seems to be lic

Door is bashed
Fighter Type: It’s a Litch! Destroy it!
Cleric: Nay, 'tis a Leesh! Destroy it!
Fighter Type: Litch, dumbass!
Cleric: Leesh, peasant!
Fitghter Type: Litch!
Cleric: Leesh!
Magic User: Um, actually I believe we call it a Lick.
Fighter Type: Eh?
Cleric: WTF?
Magic User: Yeah, my master actually was planning on becoming a Lick. He oughtta know how to say it.
Fighter Type: That’s retarded.
Cleric: Your master was a CE?
Lich: casts some spells

I’ve always said ‘litch’. If you pronounce it ‘lick’, that makes the name of the expansion “Wrath of the Licking”! Sounds like there’s a giant kitty at the end who is eager to give you a ferocious bath.

“rath. i has it”

Haha - hilarious! :stuck_out_tongue:

This thread mimics some of the nerdish debates going on between a friend and me!

Rhymes with “witch,” and has since at least 1982, when I started playing D&D.

I always thought it was “leech”.

On the other hand, the pronounciation of phylactery seems pretty agreed upon.

Yeah, but phylactery won’t get you anywhere.
