So we got home this evening and I decided to work on one of the three papers that I have to write in the next couple of weeks. I went to get the books that I had taken out of the library to do some reading… and I couldn’t find them. At first I looked in the office, because I thought I’d stacked them on the floor. Most of the floor in the office is clear, but I moved the chair and a painting and looked around. I looked under some magazines in a stack on the floor. Nothing. Ok, I thought, they might also be in the living room either on the end table or on the floor at the end of the couch. Nope. I started looking everywhere. I went back into the office at least 3 times. I went through the house, I even went and looked in my car. Eventually I asked Dominic (my son) to help me look, even though he was getting ready for bed. He asked where I thought they were, and I said I had thought they were on the floor in the office. So we’re both in the office and I’m off moving stacks of paper on my desk and Dominic says “is that them?” I turn around. He is pointing–I kid you not–at a stack of books in the center of the room, on the floor. I had literally been _stepping over them_ every time I went into the office looking for them. In my defense, they were cleverly disguised by this tape dispenser gun, which is why I didn’t see them. Pshaw. I remember hunting for a glue bottle for 20 minutes. I even got my dad looking for it as well. We absolutely scoured the dining room table, the floor, the end tables, everything in the room. Finally my mom asked what we were looking for and when we told her she walked to the table and handed me the glue bottle that was demurely sitting in the center. I have no defense. I just suck at finding. ---

Shit, I remember in eighth grade running around the house, completely frustrated, frantically looking for a particular coat…that I happened to be wearing. Didn’t hear the end of that one for awhile. ---

I don’t think you need to feel bad about this. I once spent a considerable amount of time looking for my glasses **while I was wearing them**. ---

And I’ve “lost” both my cell phone and keys, only to have someone ask if the cell phone/keys in my hand was the one I was looking for. ---

I also belong to the “lost-my-glasses-while-they-were-on-my-face” club. As well as the “This-copier-doesn’t-work!”–“Try-turning-it-on-first” club. And I recently lost my cellphone. It wasn’t in my purse, it wasn’t being recharged on the kitchen table, and it wasn’t in my right coat pocket. After some worry I found it in my left coat pocket, which was a bit of a mystery to me as I never carry my cellphone with my left hand. But all’s well that ends well. ---

I once thought I was locked out of my office because I had accidentally put my keys in my right front pocket instead of my left front pocket. Sat in front of my office until a coworker wandered by. ---

I once spent an hour, late for work, tearing the house apart to find the second set of keys. Turns out they were in the packet of my pants, precisely under the coat pocket containing the first set of keys. I found them when I gave up on ever getting to work and took my coat off. ---

I once turned my car around and started heading for home, because my keys weren’t in my pocket, and I’d need them to get into the office. They weren’t in my pocket, of course, because they were in the ignition of the car I was driving. ---

Well, the tape dispenser gun actually is a pretty good disguise, since it clearly labels whatever it’s lying on as furniture, since that’s what you’d expect such a thing to lie on, and furniture isn’t books. And I recently found my keys in the fridge. While I _wasn’t_ looking for them. Dunno if that makes it better or worse. ---
