[QUOTE=BrainGlutton]
So what? Mahmoud Abbas has not the power to broker a real peace. Being president of the PA is like being alpha male of a pride of cats.

A poor analogy, a friend of mine has a pride of cats and there is no dispute about the alpha male.

However I get your point - though it does sound as if Al Fatah and Hamas are trying to calm things down - joint policing patrols etc.

This Alan Johnston stuff is pretty strange (the kidnapped BBC reporter) it sounds as if everyone wants whoever has got him to give him up, which figures as IMO the BBC give the Israelis a bad press but retain balance by broadcasting interviews with Palestinians etc who sound howling mad.

I half suspect that they accidentally killed him.

[Still more protests this weekend.](http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/27/AR2007052700977.html) But this, from the same article, is even more interesting:

> Musharraf has said national parliamentary elections will be held as scheduled, but he recently ruled out the possibility that his two biggest rivals – former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif – will be allowed to return from exile in time to participate. Both have said they plan to return anyway.
