It seems that in past months a lunatic fringe group has been protesting at military funerals, chanting and hold up signs saying “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” and “God Hates America.” The situation has become so bad that the state of Illinois is considering outlawing protests and demonstrations at military funerals. I know that every last one of us is sick of the treasonous scum who held these demonstrations, and I’m sure you all echo my sentiments when I say to their leader: God damn you to Hell!!! I also knew it was Phelps, but if I wasn’t already familiar with him I might have assumed the title was referring to anti-war protesters. I’m not sure the title needs to edited, though, and I’m pretty anal about thread titles being descriptive. ---

I wouldn’t term Phelps and his crew as “treasonous scum” because, well, that’s insulting to actual treasonous scum. Phelps doesn’t qualify because, quite simply, he doesn’t believe in anything. It’s worth pointing out that Phelps is not actually protesting against war or the military, per se - he’s protesting the US Military because, in his twisted little mind, he thinks it’s soft on gay people. He’s not a peacenik - he’s just a fuckwit. So I don’t think you can say they’re treasonous, exactly. I guess maybe. But I don’t think he really cares about the US as a whole one way or another. His only motivating principle is whether - according to him - an action is for or against “fags.” And unless you’re protesting with him, you’re a fag too, in his mind. (Personally, I’m be proud to be called a fag by Phelps.) Maybe it’s splitting hairs. But there’s a difference between the pacifist protesting of Cindy Sheehan (which may or may not be helpful) & the drooling idiocy of Phelps. ---
