I really like that song.

Don’t know about anybody else, but Matchbox 20’s “Push” squicks me:

_She said I don’t know if I’ve ever been good enough
I’m a little bit rusty and I think my head is caving in
and I don’t know if I’ve ever been really loved by a hand that’s touched me
well I feel like something’s gonna give and I’m a little bit angry
well this ain’t over no not here not while I still need you around
you don’t owe me
We might change yeah yeah we just might feel good
(chorus)
I wanna push you around, well I will, well I will
wanna push you down, well I will, well I will
I wanna take you for granted, I wanna
take you for granted I will, I will_

All Wrong by God Lives Underwater

\*Here I am my anger and me

temper makes it hard to see

this situation i’m in again

everything must come to an end now

there’s some things that I want to do

and I don’t want to lie to you

but it still makes me go and do the things I know

all wrong\*

Sanctified by Nine Inch Nails

\*I’m just caught up in another of her spells.

she’s turning me into someone else.

everyday I hope and pray this will end

but when I can I do it all again
Air Supply’s [Without You](http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~maverick/old_public_html/lyrics/WithoutYou.html)

There’s not much to the lyrics, except this over and over again:

-

I can’t live, if living is without you.
I can’t give, I can’t give any more.
Can’t live, if living is without you.
Can’t give, I can’t give any more.
\*

Dude, get over it! Giving up on life because your girl left you isn’t really a healthy attitude to have…
They said they can’t live, and yet … they REFUSE TO DIE! I think they should at least be sued for breach of contract or false advertising or something.
I have _issues_ with the Celine Dion song that contains the lyrics “I’m everything I am because you loved me.” It’s full of lovely sentiments about her loving sticking by her through the bad times but it just ooks me the hell out. What, none of what you are is you? Bleh bleh.
I’ve heard Celine Dion interviewed and she claims she wrote that song about the love of her father, not a relationship. It makes the lyrics more palatable to me.

The winner: Joan Armatrading’s _Call Me Names_:

> [@](#):
>
> I can’t wait to see you again
> I know you’re gonna slap my face
> you beat me up then beat me again
> and over and over and over and over
> And over and over
>
> I love it when you call me names

What’s even odder is that the song reveals that the woman is beating up a man:

> [@](#):
>
> Big woman
> And a short short man
> And he loves it
> When she beats his brains out.

All to a cheery, upbeat tune.

How about _Where The Wild Roses Grow_ by Nick Cave

\*On the third day he took me to the river
He showed me the roses and we kissed
And the last thing I heard was a muttered word
As he knelt above me with a rock in his fist

On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow
And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief
And I kissed her goodbye, said, “All beauty must die”
And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth \*

**Vagus** : I love that song! Yes it is extremely creepy.

Can someone explain to me what REM’s “The One I Love” _is_ about? I realize it isn’t a love song, and I’ve heard over and over how people still play it as a romantic song when it isn’t… but the lyrics are really vague to me and I can’t tell what it actuall is supposed to be about…

OK, yeah, it definitely squicks me less as a parental appreciation song… that’s much better. But still… didn’t she do anything for herself?!

Well, there’s this gem from Nickelback (which I hope, but don’t know for sure, is intended to be ironic):

“Figured You Out”

I like your pants around your feet
And I like the dirt that’s on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While you’re looking up at me
You’re like my favourite damn disease

And then it gets worse…

I always though that the “simple prop” was the writing of the song. So I thought it was a love song.

There’s a Grade song, “Stolen Bikes Ride Faster”, which has always given me a case of the willies.

> [@](#):
>
> Some people like to go some of the way, but I like to go all the way. You have to claim responsibility for your own perfection. Don’t be afraid of the word no. It gets in the way of progress.

Link to the full lyrics: (http://lyrics.duble.com/lyrics/G/grade-lyrics/grade-stolen-bikes-ride-faster-lyrics.htm).

I especially like the part about the blood on the lips. :dubious:

Maybe it’s not meant the way it sounds, because the last line sort of redeems it, but it reads as a rape song to me! Oddly enough, I thought about this randomly in the shower the other day for the first time in years, and only then realised that the last line could have meant that “rape is bad, mmmkay?”

There were a whole lotta masochistic gal-beatin’ lyrics in the 1920s: My Man, Mean to Me, Moanin’ Low, Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man (for some reason I can’t get _any_ goddam urls to link today, so you’ll have to Google the lyrics yourselves) . . .

I can’t believe no one’s mentioned _Creep_ by Radiohead. Here’s something to cheer you up:

\*I don’t care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

I want you to notice when I’m not around
You’re so fucking special
I wish I was special
But I’m a creep \*

Man, I’m bummed just typing that out. Back to sniffing glue for me…
