21 posts and no mention of _The Elephant & Castle_? The name dates back to a pub at the London intersection in 1750, but it’s been used multiple times since, including for a restaurant chain in the U.S.

Here in Seattle, I used to spend considerable time at The Owl and Thistle and The George and Dragon. Spent one evening in a down-under place called The Kangaroo and Kiwi. I’m only a block or so away from The Pig and Whistle, but I’ve never been.

Nowadays, the only place I go regularly is The Old Pequliar, which doesn’t fit the thread.

> Here you go, the [Frog and Radiator](http://www.inapub.co.uk/pubs/frog-radiator/london/SE100RA/25300.aspx) it’s a real place and it’s been there (and called that) for as long as I remember,

It was called the Ship and Billet when I lived in Greenwich (Admittedly that was over thirty years ago).

> When I first visited England, I was surprised to see a pub called the [Hope and Anchor](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hope_and_Anchor,_Islington), as that’s the [state flag of Rhode Island](http://www.netstate.com/states/symb/flags/ri_flag.htm), where I was born and raised… obviously both must be based on some age-old heraldic device (although it’s kind of cool to imagine Rhode Island taking its state flag from a pub sign).

On the other hand the [Anchor and Hope](http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/516376) on the Thames at Charlton was where sailing barges would \*anchor \* and _hope_ to get a cargo.

In the NJ town I grew up in we have [The Shepherd & The Knucklehead](http://www.theshepnj.com/Welcome.html). The owner is also the author of the [book by the same name](http://www.amazon.com/Shepherd-Knucklehead-Christopher-M-Schiavo/dp/0738859842).
