It’s not the position that **mundane\_super\_hero** agrees with and was the poster **cochrane** was actually responding to, not **dropzone**.

> People trim hair, people have sex. Bodily functions that are no more or no less private than defacting or menstruating and **yet we have no concerns about ads relating to products for those.**

Oh,oh . . . I have concerns!

If men can’t stand to see the pubic hair on a woman they’re having sex with, what makes advertisers think I want to see it being shaved?

Ok, that’s (mostly) a joke. But just because bodily functions and the care thereof are universal, doesn’t mean people want to see live demonstrations or hear graphic descriptions. What’s next; we get to see those dickhead bears’ skidmarked underwear? I’m kind of surprised we haven’t yet been treated to the sight of someone checking the contents of their lotion softened tissue after they blow their nose.

I’m no prude, and I certainly understand how advertising is meant to work (I worked in the industry for several years). The more graphic the commercials get, the longer my list of “products I refuse to buy because the commercial is so bad” gets.

I’ve seen the Venus pubic hair one a bunch of times and they don’t show any actual pubes or genitals at all. She’s wearing a bikini bottom and runs the razor around the top of her thigh and along the top of the bikini.

Not going to be able to “prove you wrong” unless you get a bit more specific as to what channel and/or what product. Even ruling out the few commercials presented so far would be helpful. I am usually up all night, watch a variety of channels and I’ve seen nothing close to what you have described.

Sorry for my ignorance (and the hijack) but is that people who get turned on by women in _act_ of shaving or just those that like the shaved parts? Either way, that seems an odd strategy for selling razors to _women_.

The act, AIUI. There’s a difference, apparently, between shaving and shaved. It’s not always pubic hair, though - apparently there’s people who get off on women shaving their heads. Or legs.

What a world, eh?

You’re assuming only men have the fetish, there.

That, and when have products supposedly marketed to women ever _not_ served the male gaze?

Both fair points. I guess I was categorizing razors as . . utilitarian. Like tampons.

Not really. For the longest time(and still to this day) women’s clothes and “health” products were sold on the basis of how others would perceive them. I’m pretty sure underarm shaving, hot pants, miniskirts, stiletto shoes and the like were not designed for the benefit of womankind.

Agreed. I meant it was odd if the _act of shaving itself_ was a turn on for men(or other women). I get that the majority of us shave for other people, even if it’s just that we don’t want to be seen with stray hairs coming out the top of our bikinis. I’m not sure very many people enjoy the act of shaving itself, so appealing to the ones who only enjoy watching it seems weird.

It doesn’t seem odd to me at all that some people find shaving sexy. It’s something often done in private, often during or after bathing, and may involve intimate body parts. People do it to help make themselves attractive, and it’s pretty common for things associated with sex to become sexual themselves.

People fetishize all kinds of things. I once read about a kid who got a sexual thrill out of sitting behind an idling car. Compared to that, a shaving fetish isn’t weird at all.

_The Man Who Wasn’t There_ is a Coen Brothers movie in which Billy Bob Thornton’s character, a barber, shaves his wife’s (Frances McDormand) legs.

I love the movie, but was surprised to learn that there were people who were really turned on by the shaving scenes.

> In fact, she said that she heard of a movie that was being made about the Sexy 70s (the decade, not the age group – **that’s** another thread) and they couldn’t find any young actresses who had 1970s-style pubic hair, so the girls had to wear genital toupees.

In a similar vein, when Ang Lee was slated to direct [_Taking Woodstock_](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1127896/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_5) he wanted to recreate some of the iconic photos of the event. One of them was the skinny-dipping scene and in the commentary he mentioned hiring the extras for the scene three months early so they could let their pubes grow in for the shot.

He also mentioned how hard it was to find skinny people. It’s not, he said, that there are _no_ skinny people around these days but, “It’s a different kind of skinny.”
