Public Prayer and the ACLU

True, very true-everything said. I’m a Catholic, and I’m sure someone like jenkinsfan would be up in arms if I decided to broadcast the Rosary and say a couple of Novenas over the loudspeaker at HIS school.

Hehehehehe…Aaaaaaveee Marriiiiiii-eeeeaaaaa…

Oh, God! Make it stop…MAKE IT STOP!!!
::muttering::…even though I walk through the shadow of the valley of death…

Could you imagine the furor from Christians if a prayer to Allah were offered up on the loudspeaker?

Prayer for public schools, with disclaimers:

Dear God (note, use of this term does not mean to imply that you are male, or exist in the singular. Also, use of this term does not necessarily reflect the views of all persons involved that you exist at all. Some of us are darn sure you don’t and others are kind of wishy washy on it).

Please bless this day. (Note that some of us who believe in you don’t believe you have the power to grant this request….also, some of us feel this request should come only from an initiate, but don’t blame us for asking. Some think we need to make an offering here - grain and wine has been suggested, but there are other suggestions. Then there is that weird kid who insists all requests be accompanied by sacrifice of a virgin - but we THINK he’s just saying it for shock value).

Please help us be better people (Note the secular humanist finds this particularly offensive and asked us to make note of that).

Why is it I’m the subject of ridicule here?

And what ever twerp said I would become violent over someone saying the Rosary at my school is wrong.

jmullaney: *Why is it I’m the subject of ridicule here? *

Not guilty, jm. I didn’t ridicule you; I just corrected you. I’m happy to learn that you’d be broadminded enough to tolerate public prayers from a member of a different faith or denomination. I hope you’ll also be broadminded enough to understand that your characterization of the ACLU’s position on school prayer was unfair and inaccurate.

I guess that I did rush to judgement against the ACLU. However, I don’t understand where people come from when they can’t tolerate a moment of silence for any religion. When I say I’m for freedom of religion, I really do mean it. And should a Moslem openly chant an Islamic prayer at my school I would have the decency to lower my voice so as to not disturb them. I fail to see how tolerance is viewed as bad thing.

And should said Moslem or Christian chant said prayer, then the ACLU and most (all?) of the people in this thread would be very much in support of their legal right to do so.

It is when they use state funded equiptment to broadcast this message that we have a problem with it.

This is why you percieve yourself as being ridiculed. You haven’t listened to the opposing arguments at all. You just block your ears and scream “I’m being persecuted.”

jmullaney: And should a Moslem openly chant an Islamic prayer at my school I would have the decency to lower my voice so as to not disturb them.

Hear, hear! I think that respect and courtesy are always appropriate in such situations, and I’d be surprised if there’s anybody here who would really do otherwise in a case like that. Just because we object to a school’s arranging for students to offer prayers over the public-address system or as an official part of football games (or in a mandatory moment of silence) doesn’t mean we don’t believe that personal prayer, silent or spoken, should be treated with respect.

(P.S. Off-topic, but whatever happened to “Itchy the flea-filled beagle hound”? I always kinda liked that phrase and I wondered who Itchy was.)

Speaking of respect and courtesy, by the way, I suppose it’s generally considered more respectful and courteous not to call one poster by another poster’s name. I don’t know whether you or jmullaney would find it more insulting that I mixed your handles up, jenkinsfan, but I assure you it was just a fried synapse and no disrespect was intended to either of you. Sorreeeeeee…

That “twerp” would be I. What if I decided to broadcast a Novena to Saint Blaise over the loudspeaker at your school?

(BTW, if you want to call names, the Pit’s the place to do it, not here, right mods?)

[Moderator Hat ON]

Righty-o. Keep it in the Pit, jenkinsfan.

[Moderator Hat OFF]

Actually, JF, that should have read “I’m sorry, everyone. I was mistaken. Thank you for helping me increase my understanding.”

Or words to that effect. Care to try again?

Ah, well, that’s different then. Near as I can tell, neither the ACLU nor anyone posting to this thread has opposed a moment of silence. No one. At all. Got it?

jenkinsfan said:

Perhaps because you haven’t taken andros’ advice, above, yet.

Or because you repeatedly start threads in which you can preach at people.

Or because you claim to have evidence for creationism and never share it.

Oh, wait. Sorry. Those last two were reasons you’re ridiculed in other threads. So sorry to confuse it.

Well (and I could be wrong) but the ACLU has opposed this, as they should. We have lots of free time in school for prayer. We call these times “recess,” “lunch,” and “between classes.”

There is no need for another “moment,” aimed solely at encouraging prayer, in the middle of otherwise useful educational time.

If the ACLU doesn’t oppose this, I certainly do.

What the ACLU DOESN’T oppose, however, is prayer on your own time. Nobody opposes this, near as I can tell.

Sorry, Flymaster, you’re correct. I was still thinking of football games–a moment of silence before a game is not a problem, and hasn’t relly been an issue.

I was wrong. It sucks being wrong, but I admit it.

Now please don’t tell me to get off the cross, which is exactly why I held off on conceding.

Um, why is my response so lengthy? In inches, I mean.

Um, because:

Well, I wasn’t aware of doing that intentionally. Perhaps I held down the Return key or something. Oh well, live and learn.
