Conversion to Islam was generally a good career move for corsairs, however strongly they adhered to it, but probably didn’t adhere to Christianity much before either. In other words, they would’ve mostly converted for expedient reasons.

But yes, a lot of prominent ones were Europeans who turned to piracy, or privateerism under nominal Ottoman control. They heyday of the (sometimes Christian origin) corsair was about 50 years before Puckle.
