Well, I might not be the one to ask considering that my dog’s name is Marang(and let me tell you, it didn’t take awfully long to figure out that to doggy ears Marang sounds awfully similar to Moron), but I’ll give it my best shot. Tristan and Isolde Sit and Stay (though you might have trouble training them to, well, sit and stay. still it would be worth it to be able to shout out "Come Sit! Roll-over Stay! etc etc) David and Bathsheba Humbert and Lolita Wallace and Gromit (ok so technically they’re both males, or so I assume, but Gromit seems pretty gender neutral) Microscope and Telescope Mind and Body Funnel and Cheeseboard Ok I’m getting a bit silly now, I think it’s time I stopped. Yeah, basenji’s are the (sort of) barkless dogs. They make a kind of whiny, squeeky noise, I think. I wonder if this is a recessive trait. They’re a mix, so I’m not sure if the barkless thing would have been passed down to them. When I was with them yesterday, they didn’t make any sound…just very friendly licking noises! They seemed very healthy and active. ---

Well, my cats are named Sulu and Uhura- figured I’d go for supporting ST characters. Interestingly, when they had kittens, we named the kittens Picard, Riker, Troi and Tasha- the “next generation” as it were. We then had them fixed. ( so no Sisco, Odo, Kira, etc…). My 2 dogs are Bear and Raven- Bear 'cuz he was named when we got him, and by the time we decided to keep him, he was more a “Bear” than anything else we could think of. Raven is so named because he is a stray we took in during football season. If we’d have found him in the spring, He’d probobly be “Oriole”. Nahh, Raven is a much cooler name. 🙂 * * * Cecil said it. I know this isn’t helpful, but Funnel and Cheeseboard made me cackle hysterically for about 2 solid minutes, so that gets my vote. Really, though, I’m for waiting to see what their personalities are and giving them names that suit them. My animals are Edie, Francesca, Snuggles, and Hap, and they are all pretty much what you’d expect from animals called those names. Congratulations on the new babies, they are very lucky to have you! ---

Since they’re basenji’s, how about Mute and Squelch. I’ve always wanted one large dog, maybe a lab, name him Muffin and a little dog, maybe a Jack Russell, name him Chainsaw. Or maybe Clorox for a dog. Especially if it’s black and white. Had a friend with a cat named Pencil. What a name. ---

i agree with waiting to see what they “tell” you their names. however, most of my pets (and plants and cars and whatever else i decide needs a name) have been named for favorite characters in books. j.d. salinger has lots of sibling names… my favorites being franny and zooey. also, from my sig line, mehetibel is a girl (although a cat), and archy is a boy (but a poet-cockroach). am i helping? hindering? it’s really late, and i should have been in bed looong ago… * * * “…for i am always a lady, archy… always a lady. i did not do anything vulgar. i simply removed his right eye with my left claw.” mehetibel the cat on the subject of marraige ---

I had a basenji in high school. Named Tucker. No logic for that name at all. Great dog in the lines of no/little shedding. Didn’t eat to much and yodeled to be let in. A little history on the dogs. They originated in Africa where they were trained ( a bajillion years ago) to hunt game and not bark, lest they scare off the quarry. My dog yodeled,which was very freaky to hear at first, but very cool after awhile because no one could blame my dog of barking incessantly. He did have tons of energy (Read; needed lots of walks and play time) and was a good, nondestructive dog. VEry low (fur) maintenance dog that loooooves hot weather. Alas, I don’t know if Tucker ever mellowed out because I sold him in a garage sale. ---

Shirley: thanks for the info on basenjis. That’s good to know, especially the hot weather part…SC can get a little warm, you know. My husband read this thread last night and I thought the beer was going to come up through his nose on a couple of them…Juan & Amaul, especially. I think he might be set on, God forbid, Igor (after Terry Randall, who apparently played for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles rugby club?) for the boy dog. Rosalita is still really high on the list. I’m still working on him, though, for something a little more attractive for the little fellow. Only three more days until we go back to the animal shelter!!! YAY!!! ---

Weird - I don’t remember what I made on old tucker now, but it was along the lines of $20 and all his equipment. You see, I had never picked up a dog training book and _thought_ Tucker was housebroken cause he’d go outside to do his business. Then, my mom went into a storage room in the basement that she hadn’t been in in months and all over the small floor was …well…you guessed it. We couldn’t smell it either, amazingly enough AND guess who had to clean it all up. That weekend was the garage sale and some nice black ladies fell in love with him and made an offer I couldn’t refuse.
