…and if a member of US armed forces is wounded more than once do they get the medal again, or a bar to the first one.
Looks like there was one in WWI
Not exactly the same but similar.
Yeah, we don’t currently though. Does the US issue campaign medals?
You get the medal again. Like other awards you don’t wear more than one at a time. When you are wearing ribbons on the dress uniform the ribbon for the PH will have an oak leaf cluster for each award after the first one.
Yes. There are three currently being issued for service now. The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal , the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal .
This is probably a seperate GQ, but seeing as a Purple Heart gains increased VA benefits, is the increase in benefit tied to the injury sustained? For example if someone has damaged lungs from smoke inhalation, are they covered for future repiratory problems but not for some random unconnected ailment, or is it a blanket thing?
There was also the “Wound stripe”
which the US also used until it went back to the Purple Heart.
I wouldn’t be suprised if the Brits still had something, but I can’t find it. Certainly they don’t have an actual medal for being wounded.
There’s certainly nothing in our current slimmed down medal tables, but I’m thinking that a soldier wounded in action would likely earn a “Mention in Despatches”?
Maybe wrong here Struan but I was given to understand that a mention in despatches was used if a combatant had distinguished him/herself in action but not to the extent of warranting a medal for it.
Seems a bit silly but there you have it.
After reading through this I thought I’d take a look at the Audie Murphy site.
This is a guy that earned very single honour his country had to offer plus some from France and Belgium,
I regret to say that the UK seemed fit to award him nothing
