I am developing a small electronic device to be known as a “Yamaguchi”. It will have three or four buttons and a small LCD display: you will raise, nurture, train and compete tiny figure skater who will live on the screen. If you can earn an Olympic gold, you can travel to the factory in Hayward to get an upgrade card to try to shepherd the skater through a post-Olympic career – as long as you can maintain her physical and emotional health on the trip there. ---

When I was in high school in the mid 1960s, boys who wanted to feel like they looked clever used the insult, “You are lower than whale shit, on the bottom of the ocean!” Well, it turns out the time-honored insult has it all wrong. Much later, when the whalers and the anti-whalers yelled at each other, the whalers said if the whales weren’t eating tons of plankton every hour, there’d be more for the rest of the swimmy critters to eat. It didn’t work out that way. When the whale were, um, over-whaled, the supply of plankton (tiny sea bugs) went away, too. Specialized marine biologists figured out why. When a whale poops, and it’s a lot of poop, it floats. Any nearby plankton thank their tiny gods as they go into a frenzy of eating and breeding. Where there was a quarter-acre of whale dung, a few days later there’s a massive plankton field. Little fish scramble to eat what they can before the next pod of whales gobbles up most of it. Bigger fish and sea birds come to eat the little ones, and pretty soon you have have the whole food chain gathered in one place, including humans on fishing boats. The really circular part is between the whales and the plankton. The whale eats the plankton that ate whale shit, so he’s indirectly eating the poop of his own brother (or maybe even the Prince himself !) The individual plankton eats whale dung, which had been his parents a few hours before. So, to wrap it up, a multitude of things are lower than whale shit, which never sinks. ---
