> I was taught in school (all the way through 12th grade) that the sole requirement for words to rhyme was for them to have the last syllable pronounced the same. Thus, people and purple are rhymes. So are lozenge and orange.

Almost. Not the last syllable, but the last accented vowel and all that follows it. So people rhymes with steeple, but not purple.

The Netherlands get bigger now and then, but the rest of **Yurp’ll** be the same size next year.

Higamus, hogamus,
Clever Antonius
Comes and plays Colophon
At his own game.

Writing or reading,
Now where is this leading?
Come on then, everyone -
Let’s do the same!

Piggoty poggoty
O **Malacandra** , we’re
Helping these zombies come
Back from the Dead

My chief concern is that
[Sesquipedalian](http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sesquipedalian)
[Dactyls](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_dactyl) are possibly
Killing the thread. ☹

Zimbity zombity
Thread resurrection is
often considered to
be a faux pas

But this example has
reanimatedly
proved the exception by
raising the bar 🙂

The word, chimney, has no perfect rhyme as far as I know. I suppose you could claim it rhymes with Bimini, but that requires pronouncing it Bimney.

^^ **CC** , since you’re clearly allowing place names, then [Rhymney](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhymney) in Wales is a perfect rhyme for _chimney_.

Caliphy colophy
**Colphon** ’s poetry
livens up threads like this
one that we’re in.

Having just him, though, is
anticompetitive.
Get off your duffs now and
go for the win!
(No offense meant to Malacandra and Antonius Block - I just couldn’t work you all into one poem)

Walloping wombats, now
Gary’s got in on it -
How is a man to keep
Up with this sh\*t?

Saturday morning, and
No inspiration, I
Can’t think of metre or
Rhyming or wit. ☹

Pedantry podantry
Names of Welsh villages
to an outsider can
often cause strife

Though it’s spelled “Rhymney”, some
idiosyncracy
means you say “[Rhumney](http://www.places2b.co.uk/place10848/rhymney.html)” in-
stead, but that’s life!

“Rimney” or “Rumney”, I
just couldn’t tell you, a
native Welsh-speaker is
not what I be:

“Cardiff” is easy; I’ll
hazard “Pwllheli”; but
“Llan-something-gogogoch” 's
too hard for me!

If you’d care to turn this little poetry competition into some REAL flyting, please see the [new contest](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=14268149).

I picked limericks to start out because they’re easy. If it works well, we can move on to double dactyls, haiku, iambic pentameter, and sonnets. Sonnet slam, anyone? 😃
