Quantum Leap reboot: series premiere and synopsis confirmed

Didn’t Sam leap into a Civil War soldier once? IIRC their wank was that it was his great great grandfather.

What if Janis has the parts and knowledge to build the accelerator chamber equivalent of Jeebs’ deneuralizer in MiB 2?

He had to get his ancestors together so he and the project would exist.

In the one episode, Ian mentioned that the facial recognition software was unique like a fingerprint and that unless the brother was a twin, it would not be him. Magic confirmed that he did not have a twin.

I guess that is possible. I assumed that project QL was pretty big time and not something that could be done in one’s garage.

The entire project, including Ziggy and monitoring systems, sure. Janis currently depends on backdoor access to all that.

The “big ticket” items, in terms of cost and power consumption, would be the accelerator and Ziggy. Janice doesn’t need the former and can hack the latter so, year, a bargain basement version of the rest does seem (barely) credible.

Just saw the half-season finale today. (This is at least the third show I’ve seen where the seasons are split up…anyone know why?)

It’s all right. My initial impression was that the writers were biting off more than they could chew by putting the present-day shenanigans and Ben’s missions in the same episode, but now I don’t think that’s the issue. It looks more like they deliberately intended Ben’s journey as the B story, while the battles with the Pentagon/rogue agents/enemies of the project are the main focus. I remember Sam Beckett having to face plenty of twists, unexpected consequences, and on-the-fly adjustments, whereas Ben pretty much just picks things up really quickly and gets from point A to point B. For all the times his life is in danger, we rarely see him struggle a task, and that may be a sign that this writing staff just doesn’t know how to challenge him and still allow him to succeed. On the homefront…honestly, I’m having trouble keeping up. There’s a lot going on and a lot of moving parts. I’m thinking this is going to be a Gotham-style situation where quite a few players are going to become red herrings simply because there isn’t time for them all. Ian is always funny and Magic is very relatable, which is always a plus.

If nothing else, I have a better impression of this than that other time travel show whose name escapes me. This is an ambitious project, which is plenty enough reason to keep me watching.

The original series had signs of heading that way toward the end of its run, stating with the first time we saw the Waiting Room.

Mid-season finales are very common.

Ben finally remembered the reason he leapt. We’ll have to wait for the second half of the season to find out Janis’ involvement and why she seems to be working at odds with the project.

I liked it. The boxing episode is still my favorite but this one was nice. I thought it was interesting how Ben almost gave up on this leap.

I watched tonights episode with Ben on the Navy ship.

Decided to start catching up on the NBC App. I’ve seen the first 4 episodes. The show works better for me when I can watch several episodes in a night. I don’t like waiting around to find out what happens next.

The boxing episode was the weakest so far. There’s no way a novice could last 2 minutes against in a title fight. The war veterans ptsd story was nicely done.

The bail bond episode was very good. I liked the marriage proposal story and the drug cartel angle.

I think the ship episode is the best of the season.

Obviously, Ben had the fighter’s physical abilities. I assume that some of the fighter’s reflexes might have been inherited too. But yeah, the quick “here’s how to box” bit was unconvincing.

Outside of the actual boxing, I thought that had the most touching story of the series, outside of the story about the trans girl which hit me really hard. That one actually got me emotional.

In the old series, this was called the “Swiss Cheese” effect. Sam would always retain some knowledge and skills from the person he leaped into—though exactly how much depended on the plot.

The Swiss Cheese Effect referred to Sam’s patchy memories of his own past. As far as I can recall, he never had any memories of the person he’d jumped into. A couple of episodes establish that he somehow still has his own physiology, such as the episode where he leaps into a chimp, and ends up rescuing a drowning man despite the episode clearly establishing that chimps’ physiology makes it impossible for them to swim.

I’m watching the Family Style episode (when Ben leaps into a cook at a family Indian restaurant) and he’s excited that he finally has knife skills, which confirms that yes, he inherits the physical talents of his host. Muscle memory at least is part of what he gets.

So when he leaped into the boxer, he definitely gained boxing skills, if not experience.

It’s interesting that Sam is referenced regularly. A guest appearance would draw big ratings.

I wonder if Sam aged? He leaped into people of all ages.

“In January, the pilot was sold and a script was sent to me because the character of Sam Beckett was in it, which makes sense, right? As so many of you have been asking me the last several months, ‘How could you do QL without Sam?'(or Al, for that matter) Well, I guess we’re about to find out. That’s the story. As the show has always been near and dear to my heart, it was a very difficult decision to pass on the project, a decision that has upset and confused so many fans of the original series. However, the idea of anyone ‘leaping’ around in time and walking a mile in someone else’s shoes, remains a very appealing concept and so worthy of exploration, especially given the current state of mankind. In that spirit, I am crossing my fingers that this new cast and crew are lucky enough to tap into the magic that propelled the original Quantum Leap into the hearts and minds of generations past and present. I wish them good luck and happy leaping!”

There is still speculation that he might appear as a cameo at some point.

I’m wondering what happened to Sam’s body. He never returned home, so presumably his comatose body still lay there. Is it hooked up in a hospital just in case? Did they stop trying to keep the body alive and bury it?

What comatose body? It was Sam’s actual body doing the leaps. He had an aura that made him look like the person he replaced, but it was still his own body.

In one leap, he replaced a man who lost both legs in Viet Nam. Sam, however, could still walk on his own legs.
