It’s a good thing you asked in this thread though. Because you don’t have an HSA, and all that prior discussion about HSA’s would have been inapplicable to you and led you to greater confusion.
Here are a few HSA threads for anyone that may be following along or find this thread later. In reverse chrono order = newest on top:
Corporate HR has not been much help (as usual) so I thought I’d ask here, where someone might be able to give me a decent answer.
Here’s the situation: a couple of years ago, before my wife retired, she was on my health insurance (single+spouse, or family, something like that). Then she retired, and went on Medicare, and I changed my insurance coverage to Single.
My HSA debit card expires this month so they sent out new debit cards last month - one for me, and one for my wife. My wife hasn’t u…
I’ve had a HDHP for a couple or so years and have an HSA that I contribute to. I contribute basically $100/week to the HSA, and my employer contributes $1700 annually. At the moment I have about $19.5k in the account. My max OOP for a year is $11k if everything were out of network (I cover my college age son, so my maxes are family size), which would never happen, and my max health OOP in network is $6900. I’ve never even come close to half that.
So: how large should I let my HSA grow before I …

I know that some people (Dave Ramsey is one prominent example) love HSAs, but I would appreciate some advice from those who have one, or at least who know something about them.
I work at a large public university. My health insurance covers both me and my wife. The interesting thing is, my current plan also has a fairly high deduc…
Can funds in an HSA account be used for medical expenses with a date of service PRECEDING the HSA start date? My wife claims it doesn’t matter - as long as it is a medical expense. But, I’d like to hear the wisdom of the SD before simply taking her word for it.
If you have a HSA, have ever really looked hard at the online stats concerning your activity to date? I can’t call to ask until Monday, but their cute little online graphics shows total costs 2x what I’ve paid in to this account! If you even go 1 penny negative, I was told the HSA claim will bounce. You can resubmit once funds are available. So, I just want to ask the wisdom of the SD… How could it be possible that my “total payments to date” are so out of whack with what I’ve agreed to hav…
