Question for Dr. Who fans

There’s just one episode you never want to watch. The first Doctor in “The Gunfighter”.
It’s the worst rip off of the OK Corral I’ve ever seen. They had no idea how to make a western.

I like all the rest.

I always liked Peter Davidson too…that cricket outfit with the question marks on the collar was just so cool. Plus, he had a great exchange once concerning the celery in his lapel, something like: “If there are toxins in the air, the celery becomes discolored.” “And then what do you do?” (stops and stares intently) “I eat the celery.”

Another interesting bit about Tom Baker: in the Potato episode of Black Adder II, Tom Baker played Captain Rum. Hard to tell he’s the same guy. Same nose, but he doesn’t use his natural voice and wears an enormous red beard for the entire episode. OH, he’s hilarious in that episode…

Thank you all for the suggestions, and, Guy Propski, for the link. I’ll start looking in the new year. Mmmmmaybe…DW episodes will eventually be available on DVD, if they’re not already!

Unfortunately, Doctor Who is only available on video in the US. “The Five Doctors” will only be released on DVD in the UK. I hope that this state of affairs will change, but the BBC has been notorious for fucking around with its Doctor Who franchise.

Guy P: I thought Rock and Roll Part II was the stadium hit. I always imagined it being a two sided single and this was the b side. Could be wrong.

Not ‘The Happiness Patrol’!! That’s the one with the big candyman in it! Good lord that was a dumb idea!

Watch ‘Delta and the Bannermen.’

Though ‘Paradise Towers’ is good - it has Richard Briers in it.

Sunbear–No. Gary Glitter had two songs, “Rock and Roll Part 1” and “Rock and Roll Part 2.” #2 was just a continuation of part 1. As I said, “Doctorin’ the TARDIS” was a takeoff on/tribute to/sample of the music of “R&R Pts. 1&2.” It’s easy to keep straight; just look at the release dates (1972 for the Gary Glitter song, 1988 for the Time Lords (a.k.a. the KLF)).

GuanoLad–the Kandyman was supposed to be a takeoff on Bertie Bassett, the mascot of Bassett Candies. Originally, he was supposed to look like a sugar-coated human, but the special effects people decided to go for the parody. In any event, “The Happiness Patrol” is a satire of Margaret Thatcher’s England.

Guanolad: you are aptly named.

Speaking your vile slanders against the Sainted Sarah Jane is heresy! She was the cutest of all the good Doctor’s Companions, and fun to watch.

The Tom Baker episodes got me hooked. The series is enormous fun, and I recommend it to everybody.

The candyman was a bit silly, but I loved the basic concept of a society working to make sure people are happy by totalitarian means. Helen A. was one of the show’s best villains, because she was the only villain who was truly only trying to help others. Her line “I only wanted to make people happy” is one of my favorite lines from any of the doctor’s enemies. And the concept of Fifi – the killer french poodle – was great.

There was a lot of off-the-wall thinking in that episode, and I loved the weirdness.

I liked the first episode in “The Keys of Time” where the doctor and Romana are on Ribos.

“One more thing, your name. What is it?”

“Romana Valatna Ruinda.”

“By the time I call that out you could be dead. I’ll call you Romana.”

“I don’t like Romana.”

“It’s either Romana or Fred.”

“All right call me Fred>”

“Good. Come on Romana.”

I liked a lot of the companions. My favorite group though was Adric, Neisa, and Tegan in the same episodes.

The worst companion was Peri.

Mostly the companion was needed so Doctor Who could explain what was going on to her and the audience. Better than talking to a camera.
Doctor Who still doesn’t beat the Avengers in my book. The Avengers was a little goofy, but it was supposed to be a little outrageous, like James Bond.

Oh, heck, if we’re rating companions, I’ll take Leela (who understood the role of a companion: “You only ask me so you can answer it yourself.”).

Next comes Romana I, Romana II, Sarah Jane, and Turlough (while he was trying to kill the Doctor).

Turlough!! That’s right, not Harry. Oopsy, forgot.

Silly boy me. And my first comic strip had Turlough, Tegan and the Fifth Doc in it, too. I should’ve remembered.

D’oh!

More trivia: Gary Glitter was part of the Timelords. Yes, he helped rip off his own song.

BTW, for the Tom Baker Fans…He is in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie.

He plays an elfin magus, a pretty perfect part for him, I must say.

Sounds ideal. Bet he plays it well.

My two cents worth: some of my earliest memories were watching Dr Who. I remember the autons scared the heck out of me. Something about their androgynous nature I think. I had a crush on Sarah Jane. I was mortified when Tom Baker left. I cried when Adric died.

More trivia: Romana II (Lalla Ward) is married to biologist Richard Dawkins.
