I’d buy that explanation for Edwards, but my impression is that Kubrick was really amazed by Sellers’ talent.

This is a good point. Sellers was a genius _at his best_, but not every time he was in front of a camera. There were some real stinkers in there (which is why he made so damned many Pink Panther movies- they were sure box office at times when his career was tanking).

Wherever there’s a centenarian Ziegfield girl’s death to announce, she’ll be there.
Wherever there’s a thread beatin’ up on Joan Crawford’s reputation, she’ll be there.
She’ll be in the way guys yell when they’re mad about the Tony Award nominations- she’ll be in the way silent film audiences laugh when they’re hungry and they know the candy counter will be called Blanche’s Sweets. An’ when the people are eatin’ the stuff they raise, and livin’ in the houses they build - she’ll be there, too, unless she’s somewhere else.

I hope you don’t think that I meant _The Magic Christian_ was a bad movie. I _love_ that movie.
I was thinking of the part in which Sellers’ character induces people to immerse themselves in a big tank of sewage by chucking some hard currency in there. (Back in the rosy pre-_Fear Factor_ days, when the scenario seemed absurdist and unlikely.)
It’s _still_ the mental image I have when I hear “If you want it, here it is, come and get it – but ya better hurry 'cuz it’s going fast…”
Which is as it should be. 🙂
