Every website I’ve read states that the Vikings defeated King Ecgbehrt 's army. Which version is correct? ---

[This](https://king-alfred.com/wp/2022/02/10/carhampton/) site (that seems fairly well researched based on the sources) says there were two battles (fought by Kind Alfred’s father and grandfather) and the Vikings won both: > the two recorded Viking raids, one in 836 when King Egbert, Alfreds grandfather, fought against 35 (in one version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles it is 25) ship-loads of Vikings, with the Vikings winning amidst great slaughter. The other engagement was in 843, when King Æthelwulf (King Alfred’s father) fought and lost against another 35 ship-loads of Vikings at Carhampton ---

Both the translations of the [Anglo Saxon Chronicle](https://archive.org/stream/Anglo-saxonChronicles/anglo_saxon_chronicle_djvu.txt) I have found online list the battles in question as happening at Charmouth not Charhampton. E.g.: > A.D. 833. This year fought King Egbert with thirty-five pirates at Charmouth, where a great slaughter > was made, and the Danes remained masters of the field.
