Of course I celebrate it. I have the day off, I have a nice looking tree in the living room that didn’t come in through the roof, and people keep giving me things. What’s not to celebrate?
I’m atheist Hindu, and I love Christmas. It’s cold, it’s dark, winter is in full swing here in the northeast and it seems like there is no end. Just at the onset comes along this lovely holiday where I put up a tree and light up my house and decorate. I could do without some of the family interactions, I think it’s beyond stupid that we put up with certain things from our family just because they are our family, but I love the holiday itself.
And what else am I going to do? I’ve been yelled at by Christians before for celebrating it when I don’t pray to Jesus. I don’t resent the days off, of course, nor do I resent half the world celebrating it, but honestly, I’m home anyway, and it’s pretty, so I do it.
Easter? No, but I do celebrate the coming of spring in my own way, generally by getting all excited about planting and my garden and whatnot.
I celebrate Christmas. I’ll even go to church with my parents on christmas eve, it makes them happy and so what if I’m bored for an hour and a half. Xmas decorations don’t bother me, really there isn’t anything that goes on that bothers me about the holidays.
Well, actually, having to hear the whole debate about it is tiring.
I show up at the families place, have dinner with them, catch up on old times… Its a fun afternoon. All Christmas really is to me is an excuse for a yearly family reunion. I’ve asked my parents for years to stop buying me gifts though, which they never do. You get gifts for your spouse, or for kids(I spoil my niece and nephew rotten on christmas…), but thats about it.
