Quibi shutting down

I remember seeing the Super Bowl commercial, then I remember seeing some later ads that gave me the idea that the service took existing content and trimmed it down into 10-minute snippets. It made no sense to me – if I want a quick video, I go to YouTube; also, every video streaming platform I’ve used has the amazing ability to remember where I’ve paused or stopped a longer video.

The big gimmick of the service is that all the content was filmed for both portrait and landscape viewing, changing on the fly as you rotated the phone.

I was completely unaware of that gimmick until I read articles about Quibi’s shutdown.

According to some people who used it, that wasn’t actually the case. There was clearly a good way to watch and an inferior (I think landscape was generally the best).

I was mildly interested in their Kiefer Sutherland Fugitive redo, but not interested enough to pay for another service. I didn’t even know they could ONLY be watched on phones and such, to me that would have been a deal breaker. I’ve watched a few things on the phone, and other than random youtube videos, I’d much rather it plopped up on my TV. And not via “casting” or other fakery.

Former Quibi CEO Meg Whitman is mentioned to join Biden’s cabinet. She’s a GOP member but endorsed Biden. She even spoke at the online Dem convention this year . And she needs a job

This Fugitive remake was the only reason I have heard of Quibi. It was enjoyable although the ten minute long episodes are a weirdly jarring way to structure a narrative. Kiefer Sutherland’s character was Jack Bauer except he could swear. And the plot (terrorism and mistaken identity) was straight out of 24, contrivances and all.

Fortunately for me, the episodes fell off the back of a truck so I did not end up having to pay for them.
