I once had my car towed by the Traffic police in Manhattan, and they unhooked the linkage under the car, in line with Gary T’s post. [They actually damaged the transmission in the process and I had to pay a mechanic to bang it back into shape to get it to shift properly, and it never worked in the lower gears after that.] ---
