Quick! You need to evacuate your house... what do you save?

Laptop, purse, and wedding album (if I have time.) I’m not sure what my husband would save. Maybe his guns (some of which belong to his dad.)

Given that kids / spouse are away or already out and safe, I guess my purse (because having a credit card handy will make the first couple of days post-fire a bit easier), then the PC’s external hard drive as it’s got backups of financial data.

The sentimental stuff, well, there isn’t anything that I treasure that would be all that portable and easily grabbed, so I hope I’d not waste time with it.

I suppose I should have said the pets. But the pets are guinea pigs and would need to be gotten into a small enough cage that I could get it out the door. Which would likely take too much time. So it’s roast cuy for supper, I’m afraid.

My old beaten-up Telecaster, I’ve had it over 25 years. In as much as I’m sentimental about anything it’s that guitar.

Last time I posted in a thread like this a whole load of people were grabbing their guitars, this time it’s PCs and ipods.

If I’m not dressed and with my wallet in this hypothetical situation, then pants and my wallet. My wallet has insurance cards, bank cards, government ID… everything I need to reestablish my life post-disaster.

If I’m dressed, then I’d grab my laptop. It contains drafts of my current school papers, copies of all of the material I’ve created for teaching over the last several years.

In either case, sitting right by the front door for easy grabbing is my school bag-- I could conceivably survive without it, but it’s so easy to grab, has all of my notes, and would allow me to keep attending class in the near term.

Assuming all the important documents in the fire proof safe are going to be ok, then I’d probably just grab the NAS drive that I have. That has most of our photos and music and important electronic information on it. I’ll be getting another one for the upstairs soon and backing up between the two, so I can get to either one in an emergency. Other than that probably the wedding album. It’s easily portable and has pictures that I don’t have scanned copies of (for obvious reasons).

Not having a fireproof safe, I’d take my passport.

I feel naked without it.

My Camera bag with my camera and lens, as well as my lap top where it has all my pictures on it. Everything else I have can be replaced.

Photo albums, without a doubt!

My kids, then my dog. Nothing else is worth my life.

I’d like to think that I’m more important than a dog, but when a grease fire started in a neighbor’s house I ran through their smoke filled house trying to find their small dog. I cursed myself for being that stupid while I did it, but I did do it.

My deceased brother’s softball glove.

Assuming I’m dressed then I grab one of the external HDDs of my PC - I back up my

If I’m not dressed then I grab my clothes: I keep my mobile phone in my shirt pocket and ID in a trouser pocket. I don’t stop to get dressed - I can do that outside.

BTW you reminded me that it’s time for a backup.

It happened to me three months ago. A major fire broke out at a nearby car dealer. Since there as a risk that a large gas tank could explode, my building was evacuated. I grabbed my photo albums before leaving.

Not related to the OP, but two firefighters, both in their 20s, were killed in this fire when a ceiling collapsed. People embracing this line of work are worth every praise.
