I’m too tired to hunt for examples, not that it’s hard to find them, but I can’t stand it when people post videos on Youtube where they replace the audio with shitty music. Whether it’s home video, news events, compilations, or anything, they make everything into some crappy music video. 100 years from now, historians will probably have access to vast volumes of historical videos, but there will be no sound because someone thought it more was important to hear “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” one more time than it was to have the original audio. ---

What you should do is replace “YouTube” with “home page” and “shitty music” with “shitty MIDI files” and then send this post back to 1997. ---

Adding music to a video clip seems to be a way around having the clip get pulled for copyright violation. For example there used to be tons of Idiocracy clips on Youtube. Now the only ones you can find are mashups, remixes, et cetera. All the other ones have been pulled. ---

I think most of the time people do that is because the video either had no audio in the first place or very bad quality (cellphone recording, wind blowing in the mic, backgroup noise etc). ---

Yup. I make trip report videos of hiking and ski trips, and there’s rarely anything on the original recordings worth keeping. Where there is, I lower the soundtrack and let the talking (or wind noise, or bird calls) come through and then go back to my chosen soundtrack. But frankly, there’s not much interesting going on during the audio track when people are skiing through the trees except for an occasional shout of joy. ---

There was a clip of the opening scene of Boogie nights that had “When the Saints go Marching In” or something. I think that the audio was removed because of copyright issues, but it was rather … surreal. ---
