TBH now I’ve come back to this thread I don’t know why I wrote a sensible post in it earlier on.
Stan Shmenge, you’re either a troll (who has somehow managed to notch up a post count of over 1,000) or really, really fucking stupid. I’m not sure why people are taking the time and effort to write serious responses to this.
The OP read like stupidity or trolling, but subsequent posts read like someone whose home was just broken into and who is venting. Serious responses are still probably useless (and unwelcome–who wants levelheaded feedback under such circumstances?), but sometimes I take things too seriously.
I’d like a cite for this actually happening. People always bring this up, but is it actually true, or just an urban legend brought about by morons like the OP?
Go back to Free Republic where you belong.
In a later post you brought up the “garden variety sociopath.” If what you wanted was a law, what would stop them from inviting someone into their house, then killing them, claiming they were trespassing? Do you understand that there’s a reason there is a trial in order to convict someone, and that you’re not allowed to simply kill someone based on your own judgment?
I think that stupid people should be executed. It’d save the public purse a shitload by increasing the median IQ and at the same time improve the breeding qualities of future generations.
I’d be okay with public whippings for petty crimes like vandalism and shoplifting, simply because it’s more economical to give somebody ten lashes than to lock them up for 10 days.
Let’s see, who’d be first in line for Mrs Guillotine were I Generalissimo Extraordinaire…
Death penalty apologists ? Yes, yes they would, the cruel cold bastards. I’d even one-up those idiots : I’d run into the room 5 seconds before the Ultimate Kick-off, when they’re all tied up and lying down right under the world’s largest razor, and I’d yell :
WAIT !
Sharpen that thing a bit, we’re not barbarians are we ? Ha ha." Oh, how they would laugh.
And it would be more effective, in my opinion. Imprisoning people merely subjects them to long term boredom and resentment. People are more afraid of pain than of prison. Plus pain, felt deeply enough, impacts on the psyche, thus making recidivism less likely.
I’ve never felt that prison time was that great a punishment or deterrent myself. In my opinion it takes away too many years from life relative to the crime in most cases, and yet still doesn’t punish the offender in a way that will have a sufficiently deterrent effect. I think prison is fine for keeping criminals separated from society for life or while a death sentence is pending, but not as punishment on a so-many-years-per-crime basis.
On the subject of the death penalty, I’m not in favor of it except for crimes of murder.
Except for the fact that most criminals just figure they’re too smart to get caught, so why even consider the punishment for the crime they’re committing. IMHO, it wouldn’t be that much of a difference at deterring first-time offenders. As for recidivism, it might work on those that didn’t up the ante with their next crimes because they are psychologically more prone to accept violence against people. Take a thief who doesn’t hurt anyone and beat them for it. Doesn’t that just desensitize him and the rest of society against physical violence?
