Best challenge for a sleuth word in ages. With two guesses left, I had _RO_E, could be FROZE, GROPE, GROVE, PROBE, or PROVE. I figured that PROVE was the perfect guess. If it wasn’t correct, it would give me an unambiguous clue which of the other four words it had to be.
Had to work for a 9. Now watch; one of y’all will get a 6.

The #1 word was a doozy…way too many choices. 
DEVON would check most of them, but it left me with two choices. Could have been worse though if nothing hit…I’d have had four choices, and only two words shared a letter (B). I was really glad the other three fell into place nicely. TWIST actually came to me because I had Alloy and Allow for the #2 word, and so checking the W was on my mind…wasn’t sure if there was anything else and I just went for it.
@Robot_Arm Getting a 6 with this one would take some kind of miracle.

What a slog that was…there were tons of words to choose from for that first word! I knew I’d need a sleuth word, and PUDGY actually was very lucky.
Agreed! When I saw it, I cringed. 
Loved your guess with BUCKO though…that made me LOL. Really good guess with PEDAL out of all the choices that one could have been.
Do you really think that certain day’s puzzles are objectively harder than others, and that this was one of them? I tend to think that a different starting word can turn a tough puzzle into an easy one.
It does seem some puzzles are harder than others, but you are right in that it depends a lot on your start words…not only what letters you are checking, but the placements of them too.
Most check the commons early, and if the words have several commons, and especially if they all share letters, it does make for an easier puzzle for everyone. But even if you hit the right letters in green and or yellow, there can still be several choices, which can make it more challenging. The harder ones seem to be the trap words with many choices, or uncommon words, letters, and or uncommon letter placements that not too many people’s start words are going to tell them what it is.

Speak of the devil. I actually made this one harder than it should have been. SPUNK was a bad guess. I redeemed myself with BAWDY; confirmed some letters for DADDY, and helped me choose between BITTY and WITTY for the other word.
