Quotes About Unitarianism And/Or By Unitarians?

The Unitarian Universalist church I attend will be holding a holiday art fair early next month. Various painters, sculptors, and craftspeople will be displaying and selling their wares. The artists will each give a cut of their proceeds to the church.

One member of the congregation has noted that while many Christian homes contain framed posters or hangings that feature Bible passages, few Unitarians’ residence walls reveal such proclamations of spirituality. She has thus decided to collect some quotes that might appeal to her fellow congregants, and to subsequently create objets d’art centered around these statements.

Although I’m certainly capable of compiling such a list myself, I thought I’d turn to the collective wisdom of the SDMB for suggestions. While the freethinking nature of Unitarianism, Universalism, and the merged UU denomination has created some controversy over just which historic personages can be included in the fold, this list provides a pretty good selection of names. However, quotes about the faith (can be humorous, but should be respectful) can come from adherents of any (or no) religious tradition.

“God bless us, every one.” Charles Dickens
(since this is a holiday sale)

There is, of course, “We need not think alike to love alike” (Francis David).

Or, you could excerpt some lines from a UU hymn, like Carolyn McDade’s Spirit of Life:
Spirit of Life, come unto me.
Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion.
Blow in the wind, rise in the sea;
Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.
Roots hold me close; wings set me free;
Spirit of Life, come to me, come to me.

What about jokes?

The Klan burns question marks on UU lawns :wink:
