Rachel Jeantel accepts offer to attend college.

What are you basing these assessments on?

She’ll need the good luck.

She appears to be dumber than a box of rocks.

I seriously doubt even an HBCU can paste an education on her.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out, but I suspect there won’t be any follow-up, and I doubt we’ll hear much about any entry SAT scores or the like.

I have a number of statements in my post, which specifically are you having difficulty with?

1: She’s not stupid

2: She’s not very articulate

3: Poor communication skills make it difficult to be successful in college

4: Even if they can get into college people with poor communication skills tend to wash out of college in the first year or so

5: Even with Joyner’s assistance I think her chances of successfully completing college are low because of the extraordinary amount of work it will require

I’m curious how you came to the conclusions embodied in 1,2, and 3 above.

Seriously … these are brain teasers for you?

I’m curious how anyone could express any degree of certainty about her intellectual capacity based on her testimony and/or subsequent interviews. Wonder how much confirmation bias is going on.

She doesn’t speak in flowery prose. She has a demeanor that can be blunt and even surly. She’s a teenager. For Christ on a cracker’s sake. She doesn’t care about impressing Rhode Scholars. She speaks, and acts, in a manner that is likely very consistent with how her friends speak and act. Cut her some slack. She’s a kid on the verge of adulthood. I can’t even imagine how she must feel, scrolling through the various social media outlets and reading comments ranging from flamboyantly racist to just plain cruel.

All we can reasonably surmise is that she’s not well educated. Has nothing to do with her innate ability to learn.

No, but apparently for you since you can’t explain how you came to those conclusions.

Oh, the temerity of those who would leap to a conclusion that she’s slow!

It simply must be that she’s just not educated. Because slow processing, an inability to articulate a coherent thought, and a blank stare must be lack of education, and not lack of functioning neurons.

It’s a good thing I don’t have any white guilt. Or black guilt. Some are strikes and some are balls. I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

If only there were a way of putting money on whether or not there is ever a shred of evidence that anyone was able to paste an education on her.

But hey; if you want to feel like it’s just a bunch of judgmental racists evaluating her out of context, enjoy the world the way your delusion allows you to enjoy it.

As for me, I’ll wait for a standardized score to get posted, or perhaps an unassisted personal essay describing her dilemma of being unfairly and inaccurately judged a priori.

I wish her well with any educational (or other efforts). I would wager heavily against them being successful.

Yeah, gotta love that ever-present label of “white guilt” that’s so readily bandied about these days. Few decades ago, you’d have called me a “nigger lover” and called it done.

Are you a psychologist? Did you happen to administer any tests, aside from what you saw on TV and applied your OWN filter to? Do you even understand how intelligence is measured, or that psychologists and scientists can’t even agree on what constitutes an accurate assessment? But hey, Rachel is sure slow with the responses, at times inaudible, and I bet, I just bet, she said “axed” rather than “asked” a few times too many. Dumb as a box of rocks!! Anyone who suggests that perhaps her demeanor had more to do with her angry, surly attitude rather than her ability to process information … well, you’ve got that label handy.

No, my assessment of Rachel, if I were to generalize (and see how I’ve qualified my statement? It’s what people who aren’t in possession of all the facts do when they don’t want to appear … well, DUMB) I’d suggest that her attitude conveyed all kinds of entitlement. Who cares that she was the last person to ever talk to Treyvon, and that she may have key information to share about what happened that night? She’s a TEENAGER, and hey, she’s got to live her LIFE! I actually heard her say that in a follow-up interview, and sitting in a place where she wanted to be, next to an attractive black man, she was all kinds of articulate and in fact downright flirtatious.

You go ahead and call 'em as you ‘sees’'em. Those of us with the ability to acknowledge that there are many different truths in this world, and many perils in a quest to understand these things (including bias), and who possess a scrap of humility in acknowledging that perhaps we don’t understand, or can’t with only incomplete information, will attach the “IGNORANT” label to you.

That’s one label that I’m comfortable with, given the context of this conversation.

Thanks, Tracijo67.

Now, about posting those standardized scores, or an unassisted essay…

In other words, something helping my ignorant self to get an objective assessment…

When should I be expecting them, again?

Give me my comeuppance with a follow up in 4 years, would you?

Man, don’t you have youtube video comments to write or something?

Chief Pedant, you’re making deliberately inflammatory remarks. I will not speculate as to whether you’re doing so because you believe these things or because it amuses you to pretend that you do. Either way, if you’re going to say shit like this, go do it in the Pit so people can respond appropriately.

Tracijo67, colander, regardless of what you may perceive as provocation, personal insults are out of line. Take it to the Pit if you want to call people names.

Everyone, remember that we’re in MPSIMS and behave appropriately.

If Jeantal accumulates just some college credit, she’ll be better off than 40% of Americans. Some college is better than none, and hopefully it will be a positive experience for her overall.

Lack of financial resources is the biggest reason people drop out of school. I have no doubt that as long as she stays motivated and connected to a support network, she can do whatever she wants to.

BUT SHE SAlD “AXED” INSTEAD OF “ASKED”!?!?!1

From the court transcript:"He was already by his house."Jeantel replied. “He told me.”

She really walked into that one. Basically, the phone disconnected when Trayvon Martin was near his farther’s house, twenty seconds later, it reconnected, and two minutes later, the confrontation begin, In court, under oath, Rachel essentially admitted, whether she realized it, that when George Zimmerman was at the north end of the development, Trayvon Martin was at the south end of the development and couldn’t have been caught. I doubt she’s ready for college.

I’m not 100% sure what you’re trying to say, because your post is rather poorly written (ironic, no?), but are you saying Ms. Jeantel isn’t smart enough for college because she told the truth about what she knew of the incident and didn’t perjure herself on the stand?

Because that would be a dumb thing to say.

What a strange thread. Many of my relatives have very thick accents yet most of them went on to college and had succesful lives. My uncle recently retired as chairman of the physics department of a major American university and he has a very thick European accent.

Yes, but was their skin very dark? And were they overweight? Because that’s part of it too.

I should have added West’s question up front, when he asked why Trayvon didn’t just go home. Rachel Jeantel’s saying he was already home had to have hurt the prosecution. West got the answer he wanted.

So, you are saying that by answering the questions truthfully and not perjuring herself, Rachel Jeantel proved she was too stupid for college.

Ooooookay then.
