How do radio aggregators like Tune In Radio work, and how am I able to listen to stations from all over the world on my phone?

Radio stations all over the world stream what they are playing over the air onto the internet. Not all of them but a whole lot of them have internet streams. The aggregators have a nice interface to let to play these streams.
